Christian Mystic

Jakob Lorber (1800-1864) was a Christian mystic and self-professed visionary from the Duchy of Styria, now part of Austria and Slovenia. He was known, in some circles, as “God's scribe” because he claimed to receive an “inner voice” from the region of his heart, which he believed to be the voice of Jesus Christ, and he transcribed these messages into numerous manuscripts.

Key Takeaways

  • Core Claim

Humans have a soul of countless “specifica” particles and a divine spirit, briefly incarnated together in body.

  • How It Works

Spirit spark at birth guides soul via conscience, shielded to prevent overpowering developing free will.

  • Distinguishing Idea

Life’s goal is uniting soul and spirit through God-seeking, selfishness-resistance, and selfless love.

Lorber’s Soul and Spirit

The Christian mystic Jakob Lorber asserts in his self-claimed revelations that the human being consists of a soul and a divine spirit, which, for a very short time, are incarnated in a material body. According to geologists and Lorber scholar Albert Hoffmann, the purpose of this incarnation is, first of all, to separate the soul and spirit as far as possible from the almightiness of its Creator, to allow the soul to independently search and recognize its Creator with its reasoning and its own free will, and then to love Him.

During this incarnation, the soul is exposed to a multitude of temptations but also to a wide range of inner and outer educational influences and revelations from which it must form an opinion as to its purpose here on earth. In this process, the spirit will provide the soul with a basic sense of morality. Humanity has been created by God out of the purest divine love for the sole purpose of loving its Creator in return and for loving one’s fellow human being more than one’s self. This creationist origin is reflected in every husband-wife relationship, who create offspring to love and to be loved in return (Hoffmann, 2025).

Soul as Specifica: The Building Blocks of Consciousness

As Hoffmann puts it, reflecting Lorber, just as the body consists of innumerable atoms and subatomic particles, so the human soul consists of an uncountable number of intelligence particles, called specifica. Specifica can be defined as intangible, substantive, living, single intelligence particles, thus forming the platform for universal consciousness. Specifica are the most basic and fundamental particles of the entire spiritual and physical world. Specifica can occur free-roaming or be bound in matter. Specifica continually combine/unify with each other to form ever higher-level intelligence clusters, and under the guidance of higher-level spirits working their way up through the mineral, plant, and animal kingdoms until they reach the level of a human soul (metempsychosis). And by so doing are the reason for the uncountable different shapes of matter in nature.

The Role of the Divine Spirit

A few days before or after the birth of a newly incarnated soul, a divine spirit is placed as a tiny spark of God's love into the heart of the soul. This is what it means to be created in God's likeness. But since the spirit spark is immensely powerful and vastly exceeds the intelligence of the soul, it needs to be securely encapsulated so as to not overpower the soul. But despite this seven-fold encapsulation, a minute amount of spiritual light is allowed to escape and penetrate the soul. This provides the soul with a free will and enhances the intelligence of the specifica of the soul substantially. While the specifica of an animal soul and a human soul are of the same nature, it is the divine spirit in man that amplifies human intelligence to an altogether new level. This soul-spirit relationship provides human beings with a dual level of intelligence: the intelligence and will of the soul (mind) and the intelligence and will of the spirit (heart). We experience the spirit as the soft voice of conscience.

“The god-like spirit invokes a feeling of superiority in the soul, stirring emotions of selfishness, arrogance, and dominance, which the soul needs to be aware of and resist, with a humble search for its Creator and by unselfish charity.”
