Persistence and the Hard Problem

Qualia are not ghosts, he says. “They are signs of structural persistence. Consciousness becomes more than a passive mirror. It is an active sanctuary—a thermodynamic anomaly where entropy is slowed, structure is maintained, and fragile patterns can resonate long enough to be felt. This reframes qualia from being inexplicable add-ons to brain states, to being the very evidence that something has survived long enough, cleanly enough, to register as experience" (Giannakopoulos, 2025a).

The key, he says, is “persistence — specifically, the persistence of entropy-adaptable, recursive information flow. The longer something lasts — through chaos, through forgetting, through transformation — the more likely it is to be selected, experienced, remembered, and passed on. In this view, consciousness is not a mystery. It is the structure that remembers what the universe forgets.”

Giannakopoulos claims, “When consciousness observes, remembers, or creates, it is not simply recording reality. Through this lens, Giannakopoulos states, “consciousness is not separate from the laws of physics. It is an essential part of the deeper law — the hidden architecture of survival. We live in a universe where most things drift into noise. But not everything is forgotten. Some structures—impossibly delicate—persist.

They persist because consciousness holds them. Amplifies them. Defends them” (Giannakopoulos, 2025b).

Fractalized Computation and Recursive Bootstrapping

Regarding what consciousness actually is, Giannakopoulos proposes what he calls a radical answer: “Consciousness is fractalized, bootstrapped reversible computation — a recursively coherent information structure that persists at the boundary of collapse.” This isn’t metaphorical, he says. “It is literal.”

“In this framework, consciousness emerges not from the accumulation of complexity, but from the stability of computation under pressure — the ability of a system to buffer entropy, self-reference, and maintain reversibility despite noise” (Giannakopoulos, 2025c). Moreover, “subjective experience is not a bonus feature. It is what happens when computation holds itself together, recursively, at the edge of breakdown. The mind, in this view, is not a vessel for thought. It is a persistence engine — and consciousness is the signal that it’s still running.”

In this light, Giannakopoulos offers a new, formal definition of consciousness: “Consciousness is a recursively bootstrapped, fractally buffered reversible computation that locally registers collapse as qualia.” The claim is that consciousness is not global; it is fractal. It is neither localized nor “distributed.” It is fractal—present in a structured, scalable web of reversible computation that upholds itself from the inside. The way a conscious system recursively bootstraps itself against collapse is by encoding mutual information in a fractal architecture.

How can such a system generate a unified, coherent experience? The answer, he says, “lies in a recursive phenomenon: bootstrapping — the act of a system internally stabilizing itself by using its own outputs as new inputs across fractal scales.”

Giannakopoulos concludes by characterizing consciousness as “what holds when nothing else can.” While “It defies localization, resists reduction, and haunts every attempt to explain it from first principles,” the puzzle dissolves, he says, “not by discovering a new ‘thing,’ but by understanding a new relation—between computation, collapse, and coherence…It is the recursive effort of structure to persist—an active, bootstrapped architecture of reversible computation, resisting the erosive force of anti-information…It is the computation that remembers how not to vanish.
