Conway Morris's Convergent Sentience Beyond Materialism
Conway Morris argues that phenomenal consciousness is real, irreducible, and not generated by matter. Convergent evolution, his overarching theory, repeatedly generates sensory systems, brains, cognition, and, he argues, sentience; reflective human consciousness then crosses a qualitative threshold through abstraction, language, counterfactual thought, technology, and imagination. His mature position is explicitly anti-materialist: Brains, he proposes, facilitate, filter, access, and encounter a mind belonging to a wider, orthogonal reality. The theory therefore links consciousness to evolutionary directionality while leaving qualia, subjecthood, and the causal mind–brain relation unresolved, contending that biological evolution stalls at phenomenality. The account is avowedly speculative, offers no mechanism, and rests on a theistic metaphysics.

Simon Conway Morris (b. 1951) is Emeritus Professor of Evolutionary Palaeobiology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Elected to the Royal Society in 1990, he is known for his reconstructions of the Burgess Shale fossils, which informed the Gould contingency debate and the Cambrian explosion, and later for establishing evolutionary convergence as a central, though controversial, explanatory principle. His books include Life's Solution (2003), The Runes of Evolution (2015), and From Extraterrestrials to Animal Minds (2022). His work connects evolutionary predictability with mind, human uniqueness, and metaphysical questions. He gave the Boyle Lecture in 2005 and the Gifford Lectures in 2007, and received the 2026 Templeton Prize.

Simon Conway Morris holds that phenomenal consciousness is real, irreducible, and not a product of matter: brains do not manufacture experience but encounter, facilitate, and filter a mind belonging to what he calls an orthogonal reality that pre-exists the nervous systems. His evidence is evolutionary convergence — his overarching and distinctive framework — the repeated independent arrival of comparable sensory systems, brains, and sentience across unrelated lineages, which he reads not as proof that neural complexity generates qualia but as evidence that evolution is a search engine navigating a landscape of possibilities already there, mind included, much as animal song may be a discovery of universal music and mathematics a discovery rather than an invention. He is explicit that the naturalistic program, which he endorses as the mechanism of biological history (evolution), exhausts its explanatory powers precisely where phenomenality begins, and that his own alternative is speculative, unformalized, and framed by a theistic metaphysics in which the universe is the product of a rational Mind. The position is best read as an argument from the shape of evolutionary history to the insufficiency of materialism about experience, not as an account of how experience arises.
In other words, Conway Morris does not offer a conventional psychophysical theory deriving phenomenal consciousness from neural mechanisms driven by evolution. His mature position is better reconstructed as a two-level account: evolutionary convergence makes sensory systems, brains, intelligence, and sentience recurrent—and perhaps inevitable—outcomes within the restricted space of viable biological possibilities; yet consciousness itself, especially in humans, cannot in his view be reduced to or simply located in the brain. He therefore combines a naturalistic but teleological account of biological evolution drawn toward attractor destinations, with an explicitly anti-materialist interpretation of mind that entertains the possibility that brains conduct or access a wider immaterial reality rather than produce phenomenal consciousness, while leaving the intrinsic nature of qualia and the detailed mind–brain relation unresolved, and at the same time offering an account consistent with his theistic views.
Convergence as Evolutionary Architecture
Conway Morris’s starting point is his thesis of the ubiquity of evolutionary convergence. Against strong mainstream emphasis on historical contingency (exemplified by Stephen Jay Gould’s rerunning the tape of life would yield significantly different results), and formulated partly from Conway Morris's own Burgess Shale reconstructions, he argues that evolution repeatedly discovers similar solutions because viable biological design space is constrained by physical law, chemistry, functional demands, and a deeper structure of life. Convergence occurs from molecules and sensory receptors to eyes, echolocation, locomotor systems, social organization, brains, and cognition. Camera eyes have arisen independently roughly seven times; the octopus eye is built almost as ours is. Because the space of biologically conceivable forms is astronomically larger than the set realized, he infers a deeper structure constraining outcomes, a biological hyperspace "dotted with inevitable destinations" (Conway Morris, 2022, p. 52). Natural selection remains indispensable; his claim is not that Darwinian mechanisms are false, but that they do not by themselves explain why the same adaptive destinations are reached independently so often (Conway Morris, 2003a, 2003b, 2009, 2010).
Applied to mind, this yields an argument developed across the roots of sentience, convergent brains, and convergent minds (Conway Morris, 2015). Nervous systems, sensory modalities, associative learning, tool use, play, and something resembling inner life recur across cephalopods, birds, and mammals. He takes this recurrence as evidence that sentience is a destination rather than a fluke, but not as evidence that phenomenality is manufactured by the converging hardware. The recurrence of substrates is a fact about biology; whether felt experience follows from substrate is, on his account, an open and probably misposed question.
Thus, for consciousness, the crucial extension is from convergent anatomy to convergent mentality. If evolutionary search repeatedly reaches efficient sensing and sophisticated cognition, Conway Morris argues that intelligence—and ultimately sentience—should not be regarded as a singular historical accident. In his 2007 Gifford Lectures, he proposed that convergence in sensory perception may point toward “one mentality,” and that corvid cognition suggests sentience as an evolutionary inevitability (Conway Morris, 2007a). The claim is not that every lineage becomes conscious, but that where ecological and evolutionary trajectories favor sufficiently complex cognition, mind belongs among evolution’s recurrent attractors.
From Intelligence to Phenomenal Sentience
Conway Morris uses “sentience,” “mind,” “intelligence,” and “consciousness” less precisely than contemporary philosophy of mind normally does, so his account requires careful reconstruction. He explicitly attributes consciousness, minds, and emotions to nonhuman animals and has recently described birds and several mammalian groups as displaying substantial aspects of human sentience (Conway Morris, 2022b, 2026). Phenomenal experience therefore does not first appear uniquely in Homo sapiens; rather, animal subjectivity precedes the distinctively reflective, symbolic capacities of humans.
The evolutionary argument, however, establishes less about phenomenality than Conway Morris sometimes suggests. Independent evolution of camera-like eyes, echolocation, tool use, or comparable intelligence shows convergence of structure and function; it does not by itself show convergence in qualitative character—what seeing, hearing, pain, or agency feels like from the inside. Contemporary comparative work likewise treats animal consciousness as multidimensional rather than as a single ascending scale (Birch, Schnell, and Clayton, 2020). Conway Morris offers an argument for recurrent candidate conscious architectures, not a bridging principle demonstrating why those architectures possess experience or why independently evolved minds should have the same qualia.
Human Consciousness as a New Threshold
Although Conway Morris emphasizes convergence, his later work increasingly stresses human uniqueness. He argues that human and animal minds differ in kind, not degree. Reviewing tool use, teaching, language, mathematics, and music, he concludes that a gulf separates us even from chimpanzees, treats this as begging rather than settling the questions of consciousness and Mind, and asks why, if convergence rules, we are alone (Conway Morris, 2022). The tension is unresolved: convergence requires at least two independent instances, and reflective human consciousness is a single data point, an objection critics noted (Coyne, 2009).
Nonhuman animals can be conscious and cognitively sophisticated, but humans cross a further threshold through open-ended language, abstraction, counterfactual reasoning, cumulative technology, imagination, self-reflection, and culture capable of “stepping outside” itself (Conway Morris, 2015, 2022a, 2026). The subtitle of The Runes of Evolution—How the Universe Became Self-Aware—captures the larger idea: evolution produces beings capable not merely of adaptive cognition but of knowing that they know and reflecting on reality as a whole.
This is not a denial of evolutionary continuity. Biological precursors remain continuous, but their convergence can culminate in a qualitatively novel reflective mind. The sharpness of that human/nonhuman discontinuity is contested as comparative cognition reveals richer capacities in other species. His central claim is nevertheless metaphysical rather than merely psychometric: reflective consciousness seems insufficiently captured by differences in neural quantity or computational power alone. What recurs in evolutionary convergence, according to Conway Morris, is the trajectory toward mind, not the human terminus.
Brain as Conduit Rather Than Producer
The decisive development for Landscape classification is Conway Morris’s rejection of materialism. In his 2007 consciousness lecture, he asked whether “before matter there was mind,” whether the immaterial is real, and whether consciousness functions more like an “antenna” onto realities beyond the ordinarily physical (Conway Morris, 2007b). By 2022 he was explicit that the brain is essential but may “conduct” mind without being its seat; in 2026 he stated unequivocally that he is not a materialist and regarded identifying consciousness simply with brain activity as highly implausible (Conway Morris, 2022b, 2026).
His pivotal move is to reject production in favor of access. He regards explanations resting on neurological complexity alone as woefully inadequate; he prefers the analogy that brains facilitate and filter mind rather than generate it, and that evolution crafted brains, which then encounter mind (Conway Morris, 2016). Neural organization would condition manifestation and access without constituting the ultimate source of experience. He cites severe hydrocephalus, terminal lucidity, placebo phenomena, dissociative cases, and altered states as reasons for doubting mainstream brain-production models. These observations do not establish extracerebral consciousness. Severe hydrocephalus can coexist with unexpectedly substantial retained function (Feuillet, Dufour, and Pelletier, 2007), while terminal lucidity is a reported phenomenon whose mechanism remains unresolved (Nahm et al., 2012). His conduit hypothesis is therefore suggestive, not empirical.
Mind as Transmission and Filter
To Conway Morris, mind is part of an orthogonal reality, a phrase he uses while explicitly excluding any spatial reading of it. In his fifth Gifford Lecture, he went further, proposing that consciousness may be something like an antenna, a means of finding a way into other realities, and asking what follows if before matter there was mind (Conway Morris, 2007).
This places him in the transmission-and-filter lineage the Landscape houses under Huxley's Mind-At-Large Filter Theory and James's Plural Consciousness, Brain as Filter of a Wider Consciousness, but with a distinct evidential base: comparative morphology and the deep fossil record rather than psychical, dissociative, or psychedelic phenomena. The nearest contemporary structural parallel is “Levin's Ingressing Minds from Platonic Space,” where minds are patterns that ingress from a non-physical space and bodies serve as pointers rather than producers; Conway Morris reaches a similar architecture from deep time rather than morphogenesis, and, unlike Levin's Technological Approach to Mind Everywhere, does not treat mind as a scalable property of living matter.
He adds a constraint largely absent from earlier filter theories: a brain may be well tuned to some aspects of mind and blind to others, so certain things may be literally unthinkable for creatures built as we are. This is a boundary on access rather than the conceptual closure of McGinn's Ultimate Mystery, since the limitation sits in the receiver.
Positioning Conway Morris
Two qualifications locate him accurately. He is not an intelligent-design proponent and has criticized that movement, accepting that Darwinian mechanism is blind; his claim is that the organization of the universe is predisposed to life and mind, not that natural processes require intervention. Second, the theological frame is constitutive, not incidental. Evolution is the search engine by which a universe that is the product of a rational Mind becomes self-aware, which is why the recurrence of sentience and the effectiveness of mathematics are for him one phenomenon rather than two. The entry “Teilhard de Chardin's Evolving Consciousness” marks the nearest historical precedent.
Assessment
Conway Morris calls consciousness the problem of problems and holds that the naturalistic program, while making substantial progress, does not take us far enough, running into the buffer at consciousness; he expects a science of consciousness eventually, but one unrecognizable from our present vantage (Conway Morris, 2016). His public polemic has been blunter, questioning whether anyone seriously believes consciousness itself is material (Conway Morris, 2009).
His theory is a negative argument joined to a positive metaphor. The negative argument, that convergence deepens rather than dissolves the problem of experience and that neural complexity alone cannot close it, is grounded in comparative evidence independent of the metaphysics. The positive proposal remains undeveloped: no formalism, no criterion specifying which systems encounter mind or how much, and no prediction distinguishing encounter from production.
Critics object that the antenna and filter images generate no testable consequences, and that the convergence results are compatible with fully naturalist readings (The Inquisitive Biologist, 2022). He concedes their speculative status and frames the choice as a research program rather than an empirical demonstration.
Conway Morris’s primary contribution remains evolutionary: convergence, constrained biological possibility, recurrent intelligence, and the apparent evolutionary accessibility of sentience. He attempts to construct an anti-materialist theory of phenomenality from comparative evolutionary morphology rather than from phenomenological introspection, philosophical conceivability, or anecdotes about anomalous experience.
