The core assertion of the Fundamental Awareness Theory is that consciousness is not generated by physical processes but is intrinsic to the fabric of reality itself. Theise and Kafatos argue that mainstream scientific paradigms fail to explain subjective experience, or qualia—the “what it is like” of conscious awareness. In contrast, their theory treats awareness as the ground of being, from which all observable phenomena emerge. This is in agreement with many traditions that go beyond the physical (Theise & Kafatos, 2016; Theise, 2023).

Consciousness as Fundamental Reality

Drawing from quantum mechanics, the theory suggests that the probabilistic and non-local behavior of particles indicates a deeper level of interconnectedness that cannot be explained by classical physics alone (Theise & Kafatos, 2016; Theise, 2023; Theise et al., 2023). Observations in quantum theory—such as the role of the observer in participating with the collapse of the wave function—support the idea that consciousness is fundamental rather than derivative. In their view, the quantum world reflects a non-dual, interconnected reality in which separation between observer and observed is illusory.

Quantum Physics, Biology, and Non-Dualism

Biologically, Theise contributes by showing that complexity in living systems arises not from isolated parts but from relational, self-organizing processes (Theise, 2023; Theise & Kafatos, 2013a, 2013b). These insights are consistent with the notion of a conscious universe, as Kafatos has defended, where awareness plays a central role in the emergence and behavior of life (Kafatos & Nadeau, 2000). Rather than viewing living organisms as machines composed of parts, the theory regards them as dynamic, holistic systems that participate in a deeper field of awareness (Theise & Kafatos, 2016, 2013a, 2013b; Theise, 2023).

Theise and Kafatos critique Cartesian dualism—the strict separation between mind and matter—and propose instead a monistic, non-dual view of reality. In their formulation, mind and matter are two aspects of the same underlying reality, with awareness as the primary principle. This non-dualistic ontology aligns with certain interpretations of Eastern philosophies, such as Advaita Vedanta and Mahayana Buddhism (Theise is a long-time student of Buddhism), where the apparent separation between self and world is considered a misperception (Theise & Kafatos, 2016; Theise, 2023).

Ethical Implications and Challenges

A striking implication of the Fundamental Awareness Theory is said to be ethical: if awareness is fundamental and pervades all of reality, then all entities participate in consciousness to some degree. This promotes, they say, a holistic, respectful relationship with nature and other beings, supporting ecological and compassionate worldviews (Theise, 2023).

While still speculative and outside mainstream scientific consensus, Theise and Kafatos assert that the Fundamental Awareness Theory does not go counter to science; it offers a bold and integrative vision that attempts to unify consciousness studies, physics, and biology while maintaining dialogue with multicultural, metaphysical practices and insights. It challenges reductive materialism and opens new possibilities for understanding the universe and our place within it, not as detached observers of a mechanistic world, but as expressions of a living, aware cosmos.
