Temporal Flexibility and Retro-Perception

Sergent describes how conscious access can be delayed and desynchronized from the actual sensory input. This means that our conscious experience doesn't always mirror the sequence of external events in real-time. Instead, the brain can process certain information offline, bringing it into conscious awareness later if it becomes relevant.

This framework helps explain various phenomena such as the psychological refractory period, attentional blink, postdictive effects, and iconic memory. As she puts it, “I would like to propose not only that conscious access is delayed relative to the external stimulation, but also that it can flexibly desynchronize from external stimulation; it can process some information ‘offline’, if and when it becomes relevant. Thus, in contrast with initial sensory processing, conscious experience might not strictly follow the sequence of events in the environment.” She suggests that “this capacity to process information ‘offline’ might have made conscious processing evolutionarily advantageous in spite of its sluggishness and capacity limitations” (Sergent, 2018).

A key concept in Sergent's theory is "retro-perception," where attention directed to a stimulus after its disappearance can retrospectively trigger conscious perception. That conscious perception can be initiated by post-stimulus events highlights the brain's capacity for temporal flexibility in processing (Sergent et al., 2013).

From Workspace to Playground

Sergent's theory aligns with and extends the Global Neuronal Workspace (GNW) model, which posits that consciousness arises when information is globally broadcast across the brain's networks. By introducing the idea of offline processing, Sergent suggests that conscious access is not solely dependent on immediate sensory input but can also result from the brain's dynamic and context-dependent integration of information over time (Sergent, 2018).

Based on her experimental work—timing of conscious access, preconscious processing, spontaneity and task relevance, critique of purely visual theories, and working memory without consciousness—Sergent proposes an update to previous formulations of the GNW model.

She posits that “covert conscious access might be subtended not by a global workspace, but rather by a subset of it, which we may term a ‘global playground.’ This ‘global playground,’ she says, “would be a broad network of areas among which sensory representations are shared and maintained for several hundreds of milliseconds, thus offering wider cognitive possibilities than automatic unconscious processing, but with no specific agenda. When a task is required, this global playground is augmented by decision-making processes and turns into a global workspace” (Sergent et al., 2021).
