Pinker’s Naturalism
A naturalistic, computational-neuroscientific account of access consciousness joined to a carefully calibrated “mysterian-light” position on phenomenal consciousness: all evidence ties consciousness to brain activity and information processing, yet the subjective “what-it-is-like” character of experience may be a sui generis conceptual problem that human cognition is poorly equipped to solve.

Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist, psycholinguist, and leading public intellectual whose work has shaped contemporary debates about language, mind, human nature, rationality, and moral progress. He is Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard. His major books, including The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works, The Blank Slate, The Better Angels of Our Nature, Enlightenment Now, and When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows, combine cognitive science with broad arguments about reason, evolution, and Enlightenment humanism for educated publics and specialists.

Cognitive scientist/psycholinguist Steven Pinker’s approach to consciousness is a naturalistic, computational-neuroscientific account of access consciousness joined to a carefully calibrated “mysterian-light” position on phenomenal consciousness: all evidence ties consciousness to brain activity and information processing, yet the subjective “what-it-is-like” character of experience may be a sui generis conceptual problem that human cognition is poorly equipped to solve (Pinker, 2007, 2016, 2025; McGinn, 1989; Nagel, 1974).
General orientation
Pinker does not present a novel mechanistic theory of phenomenal consciousness in the sense of Landscape categories and explicit theories. His position is better described as a disciplined synthesis: the “easy” problem of consciousness belongs to cognitive neuroscience and computational psychology; the “hard” problem belongs to the borderland of philosophy, cognitive limitation, and conceptual analysis. This reflects his wider intellectual program in How the Mind Works: the mind is to be “reverse-engineered” as an evolved system of computational organs shaped by natural selection (Pinker, 1997/2009). His essay on science and the humanities reinforces the same methodological posture: science is not crude materialism, but a commitment to intelligibility, empirical discipline, and explanatory depth; reduction, properly understood, need not discard richness (Pinker, 2013).
Access consciousness and the “easy” problem
Following Chalmers’s distinction, Pinker treats the “easy problem” as the problem of explaining why some information in the brain becomes globally available for report, reasoning, planning, memory, language, and voluntary action, while other information remains inaccessible though still causally operative (Chalmers, 1995; Pinker, 2007). He explicitly denies that consciousness requires language or self-awareness: infants, nonhuman animals, and aphasic patients may be conscious without sophisticated linguistic or reflective self-models. In later formulations, he aligns this functional sense of consciousness with Block’s “access consciousness,” distinguishing it from phenomenal consciousness or qualia (Block, 1995; Pinker, 2025).
For the access problem, Pinker is broadly sympathetic to global workspace or “blackboard” models, especially Baars and Dehaene: specialized neural systems for perception, memory, motivation, language, and action can post information in a common format accessible to other systems (Baars, 1988; Dehaene, 2014; Pinker, 2007, 2025). Conscious access thus functions as an executive summary, preventing information overload and enabling flexible behavior. Pinker adds an evolutionary-psychological dimension: some information may remain unconscious not merely because it is low-level or automatic, but because self-deception can be strategically useful in social life, a point he connects to Trivers’s theory of self-deception (Trivers, 2011; Pinker, 2007).
Brain dependence and the rejection of the soul
Pinker’s naturalism is unambiguous. Consciousness, in all scientifically tractable senses, is not an ethereal substance using the brain as an instrument; it is inseparable from the activity of the brain. He invokes convergent evidence: fMRI decoding, effects of psychoactive drugs, electrical stimulation, split-brain phenomena, anesthesia, coma, out-of-body experiences induced by brain stimulation, binocular rivalry, and EEG rhythms linking cortical and thalamic activity (Crick, 1994; Logothetis, 1998; Pinker, 2007). The point is obviously not that every neural correlate has been identified, but that no credible evidence supports consciousness operating independently of neural processes.
Brain dependency also shapes Pinker’s view of selfhood and agency. The ordinary sense of an inner executive—a unified “I” inspecting sensory inputs and issuing motor commands—is, for him, a cognitive construction. Consciousness is distributed, competitive, and partly confabulatory; the brain often rationalizes outcomes after the fact, as in cognitive dissonance, change blindness, illusions of control, and neurological delusions (Wegner, 2002; Pinker, 2007). This is not eliminativism about experience, but deflationism about introspective autonomy.
Phenomenal consciousness and the hard problem
Pinker treats phenomenal consciousness—qualia, inner awareness, felt experience, first-person point of view—as philosophical residue, but residue that is real. The hard problem is hard because it is unclear what a satisfying solution would look like, or even whether it is a normal scientific problem (Chalmers, 1995; Pinker, 2007). He rejects two tempting shortcuts. First, reintroducing the soul merely renames the mystery. Second, quantum consciousness appeals strike him as weak when they rest primarily on the recognition that quantum mechanics and consciousness are both strange (Pinker, 2007).
Pinker roundly condemns the “mischief” stirred up by the hard problem.
- “Sometimes, when I see the mischief that the 'hard problem' has caused (such as serving as evidence for the existence of God), I am tempted to agree with Dan Dennett that we’d be better off without the term. Contrary to various misunderstandings, the hard problem does not consist in weird physical or paranormal phenomena such as clairvoyance, telepathy, time travel, augury, or action at a distance. It does not call for exotic quantum physics, kitschy energy vibrations, or other New Age flimflam. And it certainly does not implicate an immaterial soul. Everything we know about human consciousness shows that it depends entirely on neural activity” (Pinker, 2025).
His positive inclination is a modest form of mysterian naturalism. Drawing on McGinn and, more distantly, Nagel, Pinker suggests that the vertiginous impasse produced by the hard problem may arise from the fundamental nature of human cognition: brains that have evolved via fitness/natural selection drivers may lack the capacity or concepts needed to understand why objective neural information processing is identical with, or gives rise to, subjective experience (Nagel, 1974; McGinn, 1989; Pinker, 2007, 2016). He eschews certainty; he allows that a future “Darwin or Einstein of consciousness” might dissolve the problem. But his current “bet” is that the explanatory gap reflects our cognitive architecture rather than a missing ghostly ingredient.
Pinker’s most recent formulation is more ontologically careful. In 2025, he states that consciousness depends entirely on the brain’s information-processing activity, but that phenomenal consciousness may not fit standard relations such as causation, reduction, emergence, or realization in the way water fits H₂O or heat fits molecular motion. Sentience, he says, clearly exists as the concept under dispute, but it may not be an empirical entity with the same status as matter, energy, or spacetime; he therefore grants Dennett that the pure hard problem may not be a scientific problem, while refusing to say that phenomenal consciousness is simply unreal (Dennett, 1991; Pinker, 2025).
Pinker seeks to deflate the hard problem by posing other just-as-hard problems that we don’t label as “hard.”
- "Moreover, I also find the hard problem quite quaint and unique when applied to consciousness itself. This is because consciousness is so loaded because we humans possess it. So black holes, entropy and singularities are just as equally if not more peculiar, but because we're not a black hole, we don't think it's something odd, but where we do possess consciousness, we think ‘that's very odd’… Why is it that physical matter coalesces and organizes itself into biological life, but there is no organic life-matter problem (although there used to be via vitalism, which is now redundant), but there is somehow one for the mind-body problem?... In many respects, this issue of mysticism around consciousness is one of those hang-ups historically from the soul, from an outdated essence of humanity, i.e., what it is to have a mind and soul that is now disconnected from our contemporary world view and definitely out of kilt with scientific practice that demonstrates that the mind is completely dependent on the brain - the rest might be unverifiable metaphysical speculation" (Pinker, 2025).
Yet, Pinker is careful not to go all the way to eliminativism or illusionism.
- "But I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's an illusion or doesn't exist at all. Perhaps it exists in the way that abstract entities like information or numbers exist if one is a mathematical realist or Platonist. But even here I suspect that phenomenal subjective experience doesn't precisely match the ontological status of these other entities - it really is sui generis" (Pinker, 2025).
Moral Implication
The moral implication is central for Pinker: if consciousness is biologically grounded and sentience is shared by beings with relevantly similar neural architectures, then the capacity to suffer—not an immortal soul—becomes the basis for moral concern (Pinker, 2007).
Landscape placement – Editor’s Note
Placing Pinker in the Landscape of Consciousness is a challenge, but while the Challenge category seems the prima facie choice, it may not be ideal because his views are clear and he requires (almost) nothing beyond known and continuing science. His views cannot be classified as a full theory of phenomenal consciousness, but rather as a naturalistic access-consciousness theorist with weak-mysterian commitments about phenomenality. His uniqueness lies in the combination and synthesis: strong neuroscientific brain-dependence; computational theory of mind global-workspace sympathies for access; evolutionary explanations for why consciousness and unconsciousness are functionally partitioned; skepticism toward souls, quantum appeals, and premature reductions; and a final insistence that the hard problem may expose not the supernatural nature of consciousness but the limits of the evolved human mind. Given the critical importance of evolution as a driver of the entire process, and his principled recognition of sentience in non-human animals, the Phylogenetic/Evolutionary subcategory or even Computational & Functional (both under Materialism) can be selected. Yet, given Pinker’s meticulous, probative way of thinking, we opt for Challenge.
