Claire Petitmengin is a French philosopher and an emeritus professor at Institut Mines-Télécom Business School, and is associated with the Archives Husserl at École Normale Supérieure. Trained under Francisco Varela, she is a leading developer of micro-phenomenology, investigating pre-reflective lived experience and methods for its precise first-person description. Her work connects phenomenology, cognitive science, neurophenomenology, pedagogy, therapy, art, and contemplative practice, especially through the integration of first- and third-person methods.

Petitmengin’s Micro-Phenomenology

Claire Petitmengin’s theory of consciousness is best understood methodologically as micro-phenomenology: a disciplined first-person and second-person method for making the fine-grained, normally unnoticed structure of lived experience available to description, analysis, and scientific use. Its central claim is not a metaphysical thesis about what consciousness is made of, but an epistemic and methodological thesis: phenomenal consciousness possesses a describable micro-dynamics—a pre-reflective, sensory, affective, attentional, bodily, temporal, transmodal, gestural layer through which any perception, thought, or feeling emerges—and that this layer, though normally opaque to the experiencing subject, can be made available to precise and reliable description under carefully guided conditions (Petitmengin, 2006).

Grounded in the neurophenomenological program of her doctoral supervisor Francisco Varela that demands that consciousness science must join first-person investigation with third-person empirical work, rather than relying solely on neural correlates or behavioral reports, and building on Pierre Vermersch's explicitation interview, the method is designed to answer the standing objection that introspection is unreliable, and to supply consciousness science with first-person data rigorous enough to enter into reciprocal constraint with neuroscience (Petitmengin and Bitbol, 2009). It treats the how of experiencing, rather than its representational content, as the primary object of investigation.

Micro-Dynamics Of Experience

Petitmengin’s distinctive object is not experience in broad narrative summary, but the microgenesis of experience as it unfolds. What happens just before an intuition arises, a thought forms, an emotion crystallizes, a memory returns, or a perceptual meaning stabilizes? Micro-phenomenology assumes that experience contains subtle diachronic phases and synchronic events that usually pass unnoticed because attention is captured by objects, judgments, explanations, and outcomes rather than by the emergence of the experience itself (Petitmengin, 2007; Petitmengin, Remillieux, and Valenzuela-Moguillansky, 2019). The microphenomenology discipline is self-described as enabling very fine exploration of lived experience, especially phenomena that constitute “the texture of our existence” but have usually been excluded from scientific investigation.

The Micro-Phenomenological Interview

The method's core is a structured interview technique that guides a subject back to a singular past experience and helps them attend to its texture rather than to their opinions or reconstructions about it (Petitmengin, 2006). The interviewer first assists the subject in triggering a form of phenomenological reduction—a turning of attention away from the object and toward the act of experiencing—then supports the "evocation" of a specific lived moment, so that the subject relives it vividly enough to describe it. Crucially, questions are content-empty: the interviewer directs attention to how an experience unfolded without suggesting what will be found, guarding against confabulatory and leading responses that discredit ordinary introspective reports. The result is claimed to be a description of experiential structure that is both fine-grained and intersubjectively stable.

Micro-Dynamics: Diachronic and Synchronic Structure

What the method discloses, on Petitmengin's account, is that experiences ordinarily grasped as instantaneous and simple in fact possess an intricate internal organization (Petitmengin, 2006). As noted, every lived moment has a diachronic structure—a temporal unfolding through stages, with a genesis that is normally unnoticed—and a synchronic structure, a configuration of simultaneous experiential dimensions. Beneath the specific content of any given episode, she identifies recurring generic structures common across subjects and domains, and a deep pre-reflective stratum that is transmodal (not tied to a single sensory channel) and gestural—felt as an interior movement—which she argues plays an essential role in the emergence of meaning and understanding (Petitmengin, 2007). This stratum is proposed as a previously unmapped level of the phenomenal field.

Empirical Application: Anticipating Seizures

The program's most cited empirical demonstration concerns epilepsy. Working with neurologists, Petitmengin used micro-phenomenological interviews to detect subtle prodromes—pre-reflective experiential modifications preceding seizures—that patients had not previously articulated, and paired this "pheno-dynamic" analysis with neuro-dynamic analysis of preictal electrical activity (the period of time immediately preceding a sudden medical event, such as an epileptic seizure or a migraine) (Petitmengin, Navarro, and Le Van Quyen, 2007). Petitmengin and colleagues advance the strong methodological thesis that first-person and third-person analyses can mutually guide and determine one another, and that such co-determination may shed light on the explanatory gap between subjective experience and neurophysiology. Critics note that the constraining relation between experiential and neuronal levels in these studies remains largely programmatic rather than demonstrated by an explicit explanatory model—a limitation the broader neurophenomenological project shares.

Reliability, Reflexivity, and the Introspection Debate

Petitmengin's most sustained theoretical work defends the method against the classical charge that attending to experience distorts it (Petitmengin and Bitbol, 2009). She and Bitbol argue that standard objections target a naïve picture of introspection as immediate inner observation, not the mediated, evocation-based access micro-phenomenology actually employs. The method has since been turned reflexively upon itself—micro-phenomenological interviews conducted about the experience of conducting micro-phenomenological interviews—as a check on its own reliability (Heimann et al., 2022). One consequence of these debates bears on the phenomenological tradition: following exchanges with Zahavi, some practitioners have abandoned the term pre-reflective for what the method accesses, since in classical phenomenology that term is reserved for a self-awareness that is precisely not available to the kind of reflective retrieval the interview performs (Zahavi, 2011; Petitmengin, 2011). The unresolved question is whether guided evocation recovers the pre-reflective micro-dynamics of the original experience or partly constitutes a new one.
