Pauli’s One World, Two Aspects: Psychophysical Complementarity

Pauli's speculative psychophysical ontology, developed through his long dialogue with Carl Jung, treats conscious experience as one aspect of a deeper, neutral, archetypally ordered reality in which psyche and matter are complementary manifestations rather than separate substances. Phenomenal consciousness is therefore not reduced to brain process, nor elevated into idealist world-foundation; it is the subjective pole of a broader order in which symbolic, mathematical, affective, and physical structures may share common roots.

Theoretical physicicist and Nobel Laureate

Wolfgang Pauli (1900–1958) was an Austrian-born Swiss theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate, an architect of quantum mechanics. He formulated the exclusion principle, clarified spin and statistics, predicted the neutrino, and contributed to quantum field theory, symmetry, and relativistic quantum mechanics. Closely engaged with Carl Jung as well as Niels Bohr, Pauli also reflected on complementarity, causality, archetypes, and the possible relations between physics, psychology, and mind—specifically the unus mundus and the dual-aspect thesis that mind and matter are complementary aspects of one underlying reality. His sustained collaboration with Jung on synchronicity and the psychophysical problem was published as The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche (1955).

Pauli’s One World, Two Aspects: Psychophysical Complementarity

Theoretical physicist and Nobel Laureate Wolfgang Pauli formulated not a stand-alone theory of consciousness, but a speculative psychophysical ontology developed through his long dialogue with Carl Jung. Reconstructed from the Pauli–Jung correspondence, Pauli’s view treats conscious experience as one aspect of a deeper, neutral, archetypally ordered reality in which psyche and matter are complementary manifestations rather than separate substances (Jung and Pauli, 1952; Meier, 2001; Atmanspacher, 2012). Phenomenal consciousness is therefore not reduced to brain process, nor elevated into idealist world-foundation; it is the subjective pole of a broader order in which symbolic, mathematical, affective, and physical structures may share common roots.

In other words, Pauli held, in a framework developed across a quarter-century of dialogue with Jung, that mind and matter are neither two substances nor one reducible to the other, but two complementary aspects of a single underlying reality—the unus mundus (“one world”)— which is itself psychophysically neutral and, in principle, inaccessible to direct empirical access. On this view, the mental and the material arise through an epistemic split of an undivided whole, so that phenomenal experience and physical process are equally real and equally derivative, and the explanatory gap between them is a structural consequence of that split rather than a defect in any particular theory. Pauli further extended Bohr's complementarity from physics into psychology, holding that the act of becoming conscious of an unconscious content irreversibly alters it much as measurement disturbs a quantum system, and he sought throughout a "neutral language" applicable equally to matter and psyche (Jung & Pauli, 1955; Meier, 2001; Atmanspacher & Primas, 2006).

Psyche and Matter

Pauli’s mature reflections emerged from an unusual conjunction: he was a central architect of quantum physics, awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize for the exclusion principle, and he was also engaged for decades in dream analysis and theoretical exchange with Jung. Their letters, published as Atom and Archetype, show a sustained attempt to understand psyche and matter within one enlarged philosophy of nature rather than as alien domains (Meier, 2001). The relevant claim for consciousness is not that quantum physics “explains” consciousness, but that both modern physics and depth psychology undermine simple materialism and classical dualisms. Physics had already weakened the picture of an observer-independent world describable in wholly visualizable, deterministic terms; Jungian psychology had weakened the picture of consciousness as transparent rational mastery. Pauli sought a conceptual scheme in which conscious mind, unconscious symbol, and physical form could be treated as coordinated aspects of a deeper order.

The Psychophysically Neutral Ground

Pauli and Jung adopted the medieval alchemical notion of the unus mundus — one world—to name a domain prior to the distinction between mental and material. Crucially, this ground is holistic and undivided: the mind–matter distinction is not a composition of neutral elements into mental and physical wholes but a decomposition, an epistemic partition of an unbroken reality (Atmanspacher, 2012). This distinguishes their position sharply from the neutral monism of Mach, James, and Russell, whose neutral bases—sensation, pure experience—remain uncomfortably close to mental capacities and are treated as accessible building blocks. For Pauli, the neutral domain cannot be apprehended directly at all; it is the condition of knowledge rather than an object of it, so neither phenomenal experience nor physical description can claim ontological priority.

Complementarity Extended to the Psyche

The distinctive feature of the framework is that the duality of aspects is specified as a complementarity in Bohr's sense (e.g., particle and wave): mutually exclusive yet jointly necessary descriptions, neither eliminable, with the exhaustive use of one precluding simultaneous exhaustive use of the other (Bohr, 1958; Pauli, 1994). Pauli, among complementarity's most determined advocates, argued that just as quantum mechanics revealed an irreducibly participatory element in physical nature, Jung's collective unconscious revealed an objective level of mind—the two disciplines meeting from opposite directions. For phenomenal consciousness, the consequence is direct: introspection is not neutral observation, since bringing an unconscious content into awareness transforms it, and the observing psyche cannot be excised from what it observes.

Archetypes as Ordering Operators

Pauli reconceived Jung's archetypes as neither purely psychic nor purely physical, but as psychophysically neutral ordering principles operating in both domains—characterizing them as statistical laws with primary probabilities and treating them as the bridge between sense perception and concept formation (Atmanspacher & Primas, 2006). His essay on Kepler argued that archetypal images demonstrably shaped the formation of scientific theory, and that this shared ordering explains the otherwise puzzling correspondence between mathematical structures conceived in the mind and the behavior of nature (Pauli, 1952). Within the modern reconstruction, archetypes function as the source of the structural, persistent, reproducible mind–matter correlations generated by the epistemic split—the class that includes ordinary psychophysical regularities.

Synchronicity and Psychophysical Correlations

Alongside these stable correlations, Pauli and Jung posited synchronicity: acausal but meaningful coincidences of psychic and physical events, which Pauli treated as occasional and non-reproducible in contrast to the reliable regularities of physics. He proposed beginning instead from reproducible acausal dispositions and regarding synchronicities as special cases, and speculated about a third type of natural law grounded in meaning rather than in deterministic or statistical causation (Atmanspacher, 2020). He also constructed a quaternio pairing energy and the space-time continuum with causality and synchronicity, seeking a symmetrical scheme in which the psychophysical stands beside the physical rather than beneath it.

Reception, Formalization, Difficulties

Long treated as an eccentricity of Pauli's private life—most of it confined to correspondence rather than published work—the framework has been substantially formalized by Atmanspacher, Primas, and collaborators as the Pauli–Jung conjecture, and is now cited within philosophy of mind as one of the more sophisticated dual-aspect positions available, rejecting materialism and idealism alike (Atmanspacher & Fuchs, 2014; Seager, 2011). Its principal difficulties are the ones its own structure entails. Because the neutral domain is inaccessible in principle, the position resists direct empirical test and risks explanatory emptiness; the archetypes invoked as ordering operators remain formally underspecified; and the synchronicity component, on which Pauli placed considerable weight, is empirically contested. Whether an unbroken psychophysically neutral reality genuinely explains phenomenal consciousness—or renames its mystery at a deeper level—remains the standing question.
