This means that brains (or biobots, or AI computers, or any engineered systems) are best understood not as the producers of minds but as pointers or interfaces that draw particular cognitive patterns into particular physical embodiments with mental and behavioral expressions, rather than emerging from physicalist/reductionist genetics, environment, and computation alone (Levin, 2025a).
The framework's controversial claim is to relocate the locus of mind: where most theories ask how subjective experience is produced by or emerges from the physical arrangement of neural matter, Levin argues that the relationship between mind and brain "is the same as the relationship between mathematical patterns and the morphogenetic outcomes they guide" (Levin, 2025a), and that experiencing agents may themselves be the ingressing patterns, with bodies serving as "a material scratchpad" through which those patterns "project effort and experience (consciousness) into a physical world." This makes the view a kind of dualist and panpsychist proposal grounded in the classic Platonism of most mathematicians. As Levin puts it, “This provides a new perspective on the organicist/mechanist debate by explaining why traditional computationalist views of life and mind are insufficient, while at the same time erasing artificial distinctions between life and machine, since both are in-formed by diverse patterns from the latent space” (Levin, 2025a).
Theory in Brief
In Levin’s view, “some of the causal input into mind and life originates outside the physical world.” His core claim is not merely that cognition is distributed beyond brains. It is that the patterns we call minds—including phenomenal subjects of experience—belong to an ordered “Platonic space” of possible forms and agencies. Physical systems do not simply implement these forms internally; they interface with them.
In Levin’s compressed formulation, “minds are the patterns.” Bodies—brains, embryos, biobots, AI systems, hybrid organisms—are the material conditions that permit such patterns to enter physical history. This is why the theory is distinctive among consciousness theories: it treats phenomenal consciousness neither as neural computation, nor as biological emergence, nor as intrinsic matter-wide mentality alone, but as the experiential projection of nonphysical, structured, agential patterns into physical embodiments. On this view, according to Levin, “physical bodies don’t create, or even connect to (and thus have) minds – instead, minds are the patterns, with their ingressions into the physical world enabled by the pointers of natural or synthetic bodies. In other words, whenever anything is built – machines, AI’s, biobots, hybrots, embryos, etc. – it acts as an interface to numerous patterns from this space of forms to which guide its form and behavior beyond what any algorithm or material architecture explicitly provides” (Levin, 2025b).
From Morphogenesis to Mind
Levin’s path to consciousness begins with embryogenesis. Development, regeneration, and anatomical repair reveal, on his view, that biological systems do not merely execute pre-programmed molecular routines. They navigate external structured spaces. This matters for consciousness because Levin sees a deep symmetry between body-making and mind-making. A mind, like a body, is a large-scale pattern assembled from competent parts. Neural cognition is one case of collective intelligence; morphogenesis is another. In the preprint, he asks whether “inner perspective” is fundamentally linked to the autopoietic patterns a construct can access. The implication is not that every morphogenetic process has human-like phenomenology, but that phenomenal consciousness is continuous with more basic forms of agency, goal-directedness, and self-maintaining organization (Levin, 2025a).
Platonic Space as a Source of Causation
The empirical claim that Levin wants to make is this: “We already know physicalism is incomplete, because engineers and evolution exploit many ‘free lunches’ – patterns that are useful and guide events in the physical world but are not themselves explained, set, or modifiable by the laws of physics” (Levin, 2025b). Thus, to Levin, heredity and environment do not exhaust the sources of biological and cognitive order. Mathematics already supplies patterns that are not caused by the physical universe, such as prime-number facts. Levin generalizes this point: if low-agency mathematical forms can shape physical outcomes, perhaps high-agency forms—“kinds of minds”—can also ingress into physical systems.
Thus, “Platonic space” is not a catalog of static abstractions. Levin’s more radical proposal is that it contains dynamic and perhaps agential structures. Logical systems can oscillate, networks can learn, gene-regulatory models can show memory-like capacities, and minimal formal systems can exhibit surprisingly rich behavior. These are not yet conscious minds; they are conceptual footholds for imagining a graded ontology of patterns—from inert mathematical regularities to active cognitive agents.
Levin’s theory is therefore non-physicalist, but not anti-scientific. It seeks to make non-physical pattern-causation experimentally tractable. If physical systems are “pointers to patterns in that Platonic space”, then the scientific task is to discover the mapping between pointer architecture and the patterns that appear.
Phenomenal Consciousness Per Se
The crucial question here is whether Levin’s framework can explain phenomenal consciousness—what it is like to be a system—not merely cognition, agency, or intelligence. On his view, phenomenal consciousness is not an output added after cognition; it is the experiential aspect of a high-agency pattern in Platonic space embodied through a physical interface. The body functions as a scratchpad through which patterns “project effort and experience (consciousness)” into the physical world. This frames phenomenality as the ingressing pattern, while embodiment determines the pattern’s local expression, capacities, boundaries, memory, valence, and behavioral reach (Levin, 2025b).
The theory therefore claims to reframe the hard problem. The question is not: How does matter generate experience from non-experience? It is: What kinds of physical structures enable what kinds of experiential patterns to ingress, stabilize, scale, and interact? Brains are the richest known interfaces for complex cognitive patterns. But they are not metaphysically sui generis. Nervous systems, bioelectric tissues, biobots, and perhaps artificial systems may differ not in whether they are conscious in an all-or-none sense, but in the kind, degree, integration, and temporal depth of their phenomenal experiences.
Unconventional Beings
Levin’s empirical orientation leverages synthetic morphology. Xenobots and Anthrobots are probative because they exhibit coherent forms and behaviors without having evolved. Anthrobots self-assemble from genetically normal human tracheal cells; Xenobots arise from frog cells organized into novel living constructs, including forms capable of replication. For Levin, such entities are “exploration vehicles” into Platonic space: he claims they show that standard genomes and materials can access patterns not directly selected in evolutionary history.
This is not an argument for consciousness in biobots. Rather, it is a way of mapping the relation between embodiment and agency. If novel constructs reveal novel goal-directed patterns, then future experiments might ask whether some structures enable not only behavior but rudimentary valence, preference, memory, or perspective. The same logic extends—cautiously—to AI and robotics. Levin does not equate language models with human minds; he argues that whether engineered systems instantiate genuine mindedness should be an empirical question, not a philosophical determination.
Explanatory Power and Open Questions
Levin’s theory links morphogenesis, non-neural cognition, mathematics, artificial life, and, yes, consciousness into one metaphysical continuum. It resists a brain-centric view while stressing the importance of embodiment.
There are challenges, of course. Does the continuum dilute the essence of phenomenal consciousness, blurring the boundary between genuine experience and impressive goal-directed behavior? How does Platonic space overcome the traditional view that abstract objects are causally inert? In other words, what motivates the conscious patterning-ingression?
While Levin hasn't formally released his official theory of consciousness, everything he has said since 2024 makes it clear that he is not a materialist. His current theory of consciousness is not named yet, but, as he puts it, "It's quite dualistic."
