Leibniz's Monads

Leibniz’s theory of consciousness is a monad-based, panexperiential account in which phenomenal consciousness is the apperceived or more distinct form of perception within simple, immaterial perceiving substances, while all reality consists of these non-spatial monads whose internal perceptual states express the whole universe from unique perspectives and unfold by “appetition” (i.e., the internal drive or activity of a simple substance), under a pre-established divine harmony.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) was a German philosopher, mathematician, logician, and polymath, among the central figures of early modern rationalism. He co-invented calculus, developed major contributions to logic and metaphysics, and formulated the monadology, according to which reality consists of simple, immaterial centers of perception and appetition. His principles of sufficient reason, pre-established harmony, and possible worlds profoundly shaped metaphysics, philosophy of mind, theology, mathematics, and later analytic philosophy.

Leibniz's Monads

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s theory of consciousness is a monadological, panexperiential account in which phenomenal consciousness is the apperceived or more distinct form of perception within simple, immaterial centers of force, while all reality consists of non-spatial monads whose internal perceptual states express the whole universe from unique perspectives and unfold by “appetition” (i.e., the internal drive or activity of a simple substance that produces change), under a pre-established harmony (Leibniz, 1686, 1695, 1704/1765, 1714; Kulstad, 1991; Rutherford, 1995; Jorgensen, 2019). In other words, Leibniz held that the ultimate constituents of reality are monads—these simple, immaterial, perceiving substances whose entire inner life consists of perception (the representation of the universe within a partless unity) and appetition (the striving that drives perception forward)—so that perception is ubiquitous in nature while consciousness, which he called apperception, is only a higher, reflective grade of perception possessed by some monads and not at all times. On this view, most mental activity is unconscious, perception cannot be explained by any mechanism, and what we call phenomenal experience is the internal, self-generated unfolding of a simple substance rather than anything caused by the body (Leibniz, 1714a, 1714b; Kulstad & Carlin, 2020).

Obviously, Leibniz does not offer a theory of consciousness in the contemporary neuroscientific sense, yet he does offer a sophisticated early modern alternative to both Cartesian dualism and mechanistic materialism. His central claim is not that matter produces consciousness, nor that mind and matter are two interacting substances, but that the fundamental constituents of reality are simple, mind-like unities whose essential states are perception and appetition.

Monads, Perception, and the Unity of Experience

Leibniz’s metaphysics begins from the claim that true being requires true unity. Extended matter, being divisible without limit, cannot be an ultimate substance. Thus, extended matter is not ultimately real but a well-founded phenomenon, an appearance of aggregates whose genuine constituents are monads. Monads are the fundamental reality: simple substances without parts, extension, or shape—the true atoms of nature (Leibniz, 1714a). A monad is not a tiny physical particle but a metaphysical center of representation and activity. Its perceptual state expresses “the many in the one”: the entire universe is represented from the monad’s own point of view, though usually with extreme confusion and obscurity (Leibniz, 1714; Kulstad & Carlin, 2020).

Because a monad has no parts, nothing can act upon it from without; monads are windowless, and each changes only through an internal principle. That inner life is explained without residue by two activities: perception and appetiton. Perception is the passing state that involves and represents a multitude within a unity—the representation, in a single simple subject, of a manifold of content, ultimately of the entire universe from the monad's unique point of view, so that each monad is a perpetual living mirror of the cosmos. Appetition is the internal tendency carrying the monad from one perception to the next. Since perception so defined belongs to every monad, representation is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of reality—a position widely read as a historical ancestor of panpsychism (Goff, Seager, & Allen-Hermanson, 2022).

Perception versus apperception

Crucially, Leibniz denies that perception entails consciousness. He distinguishes perception, the internal representational state of a monad, from apperception, which he defines as consciousness, or the reflective knowledge of that internal state—something not given to all souls, nor at all times to any given soul (Leibniz, 1714b). Consciousness is therefore not the essence of the mental but a special, higher achievement: a perception of one's own perceptions (anticipating higher-order theories), reflective and comparatively rare (perhaps closer to our self-consciousness). This severing of perception from consciousness is among the most consequential moves in the history of theories of mind, and indeed some commentators read it as an early higher-order theory of consciousness, on which a state becomes conscious by being the object of a further, reflective representation (Gennaro, 1999).

Petites perceptions and the unconscious

It follows that the mind is filled with petites perceptions—minute, insensible perceptions too faint or confused to be noticed, yet continuously present and causally efficacious (Leibniz, 1765). Leibniz's signature illustration is the roar of the sea: we apperceive the whole only because we unconsciously perceive the sound of each individual wave, none of which we notice on its own. We are at every moment awash in perceptions of which we are unaware. With this doctrine Leibniz directly repudiates the Cartesian thesis that the mind is transparent to itself and that all thought is conscious (Descartes, 1641; Jorgensen, 2020), and advances what is generally regarded as the first sustained theory of the unconscious in Western philosophy. Insensible perceptions, he argues, secure the continuity of mental life through sleep and stupor, individuate each substance, and explain why nature makes no leaps.

The Mill Argument and the Irreducibility of Perception

All this gives Leibniz a distinctive theory of phenomenal unity. Conscious experience is not assembled from externally related material parts; it belongs to a simple subject capable of unifying manifold content. Although perception pervades nature, Leibniz holds that it can never be explained mechanically. In the Monadology's famous mill argument, he asks us to imagine a machine so built as to perceive, enlarged until we could walk inside it as into a mill; we would find only parts pushing one another, and nothing among them ever sufficient to explain perception (Leibniz, 1714a). Perception, and whatever depends on it, must therefore be sought not in composite mechanism but in the simple substance.

The argument is widely regarded as an analogical antecedent of the modern explanatory gap between physical process and conscious experience (Levine, 1983), which David Chalmers famously dubbed “the hard problem.” Leibniz’s target is not empirical brain science but reductive mechanism: no arrangement of extended parts, considered merely as shape and motion, can yield the intrinsic unity of perceptual consciousness. His argument carries a positive corollary central to his system: because a perception represents many things at once in a genuine unity, its subject must itself be a true unity—a simple substance—rather than an aggregate.

Degrees of mind, the body, and legacy

Perception admits of degrees of distinctness, generating a continuous hierarchy of monads (Leibniz, 1714a; Kulstad & Carlin, 2020). Bare monads have only confused, unconscious perceptions; animal souls enjoy sensation—heightened, distinct perception joined to memory—and so genuinely feel, granting animals a phenomenal sentience that Descartes had denied them; rational souls or minds add reflection, self-consciousness, and knowledge of necessary truths. Consciousness is thus graded and distributed across nature rather than confined to humans.

On this account, mind and body never causally interact: each monad unfolds its perceptions from within, and the appearance of interaction is underwritten by a divinely instituted pre-established harmony that keeps every substance in agreement, like clocks set to run in concert—an explicit alternative to Descartes's pineal interactionism. Phenomenal experience is accordingly the monad's own internal production, with the body its perpetually correlated mirror, not its cause. Leibniz's distinctions left a deep mark: his apperception was taken up by Kant, his insensible perceptions anticipated later theories of the unconscious, and his mill argument and graded panpsychism remain historical milestones in current debates over the irreducibility and distribution of consciousness.
