Langan’s Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe
Independent thinker, autodidact Christopher Langan claims that what he calls the “Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe” (CTMU) provides the logical framework of a true Theory of Everything. It explains the connection between mind and reality, and proves the existence of God [as defined], the soul, and an afterlife. It identifies CTMU’s relationship to consciousness as a reflexive identity describing self-awareness, and must inevitably define the reality of self-aware beings.

Christopher Langan
Autodidact
Christopher Langan is an American autodidact known for his exceptionally high IQ and for founding the Mega Foundation. Despite a difficult childhood and limited formal education, he developed the “Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe,” which he claims is a true Theory of Everything, explaining the connection between mind and reality, cosmic foundations, the existence of God, the soul, and an afterlife.

Langan’s Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe
Independent thinker, autodidact Christopher Langan claims that what he calls the "Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe" (CTMU) provides the logical framework of a true “Theory of Everything.” It explains "the connection between mind and reality” (note “cognition” and “universe” in the same phrase); and “proves the existence of God [as defined], the soul, and an afterlife” (Langan, Wikipedia).
Framework of the CTMU
CTMU posits that “energy and information are convergently generalized in telesis, a protean ‘metasubstance,’ closed under attribution and composition. Telesis is the self-potentiation of reality, serving as its monic substrate and ontic-epistemic ground state. It thus replaces ‘nothingness or ‘the void’ in mainstream ontology, which the CTMU fundamentally couples with epistemology” (Langan, 2024, personal communication—following).
The universe, Langan says, is a vast arrangement of digital information and the mathematical relationships between them, but it is not entirely digital. Rather, Langan says, “it has both discrete and continuous aspects. While the CTMU describes reality as a ‘self-simulation,’ there is no reliance on ‘digital physics’ or any software construct running on computational hardware. Self-simulation merely refers to a self-modeling, self-nucleating ‘identity system’ consisting of identification operators and events.”
Langan reflects that although the CTMU is decades old, “it is one of a kind, still unique. However, due to its level of abstraction, some people have difficulty accurately conceptualizing it. It is in fact a theory about the closed self-simulation of reality, fortified with logic, language theory, modern mathematics, and analogies from computation theory and other disciplines.
Being related to the simulation hypothesis and thus inviting confusion with digital physics, it is frequently likened to the fictional electro-mechanical reality-simulator cinematically depicted in The Matrix, whose layers of hidden processing deliver realistic output to a ‘display’ sensed and inhabited by its embedded observers.” However, Langan stresses that “the CTMU predates The Matrix by at least a decade, and the self-simulation it proposes entails something far deeper than digital physics.”
Consciousness and Reality
While Langan agrees that it is only through consciousness that we can perceive or know anything at all,” he contends that “this is not a mere arrogant assumption about human consciousness, but defines a more general form of consciousness on the reflexive self-processing, self-identification, and self-definition of a henologically closed reality (identity operator) whose state transformations involve nothing external to reality itself. This processing is not computational, but involves a more powerful ‘pre-real’ sort of processing I sometimes call “telic recursion”, which involves the intrinsic rescaling of a ‘conspansive’ (generative self-rescaling) manifold.”
Langan says that “CTMU simply pushes the intrinsic relativization process [Galilean relativity, Mach’s Principle, Einsteinian relativity] to its logical conclusion, thus unifying space, time, and matter. In the CTMU, reality as we know it is conspansively dualized (‘run in reverse,’ evolving inwardly as well as outwardly) by replacing elementary constituents of matter with identity operators which cause it to evolve from the top down, by factorization of the ontic ground state (telesis) rather than from the bottom up in a fixed array. These dual pictures of reality resemble the Bohm-Hiley holographic model of reality, which juxtaposes dual pictures that he called the implicate and explicate orders. This yields a mathematically compatible mirror image of reality which constitutes an extension of the physical universe, resulting in a ‘self-dual’ picture of reality.
The contents of physical reality are then reinterpreted in the self-dual framework, putting a new complexion on reality and our means of knowing it”
According to Langan, and simply put, here’s what the CTMU "really is". The CTMU describes:
- The necessary self-containment and intrinsicality of ultimate reality; the unification of space, time, and matter, and somewhat equivalently, of universe, theory or language, and their model-theoretic correspondence (as tersely expressed by the titular phrase "Cognitive Theoretic Model of the Universe");
- A universal language that extends the notion of a formal system, which is dualistic and therefore inadequate for the description of reality, to a profoundly self-referential Metaformal System that couples the mental and the physical, mirrors the symmetric logico-geometric identity of reality, and is thus adequate for coherent reality-theorization;
- A metaphysical extension of physical theory in which consciousness is a generic property of reality, with corresponding implications for psychology and spirituality;
- An "absolute" truth system providing a reliable "supertautological" core description of reality in which various theories and concepts, including quantum theory, can be convergently interpreted; and
- A self-modeling reality or "self-simulation" in which the observable universe is embedded in the reflexive processing aspect of reality as a kind of terminal display (or if one prefers, a "multi-frame display terminal").
At the same time, “it is only through consciousness that we can perceive or know anything at all. Thus, our reality can just as well be conceived as a vast network of conscious experiences: perceptions and the laws which govern them.” Because there is nothing outside reality, reality must contain all of the conditions necessary for its own existence, and given sufficient time, “even mere possibility is enough to ensure that it generates itself” (Section: CTMU Wiki, n.d.).
God, Morality, and Self-Refining Reality
Although this kind of mind, which Langan calls God's mind, “sits in knowledge of itself in an unchanging, eternal way, it contains within it all of the processes required for it to refine itself into existence out of nothingness.” It is here, according to CTMU, that “consciousness is stratified: the bottom stratum is the all-knowing mind of God,” within which “all of the more superficial strata of consciousness” are contained. From God's perspective, God “is aware of all the steps in its own creation.” However, from the perspective of these more superficial strata—of which our human minds are pieces—the universe appears as a physical entity unfolding in physical space.
But because “our conscious minds are contained within God's consciousness … we retain the creative power and freedom of God on a scale that is localized in time and space.”
CTMU describes reality as “a Self-Configuring Self-Processing Language, a reflexive intrinsic language characterized not only by self-reference and recursive self-definition, but by full self-configuration and self-execution” (Langan, 2002). Embedding issues of absolute morality and karma, “if we choose to act in a way that is in line with the telos, those parts of our minds that match the mind of God get preserved and we basically move closer to the all-knowing substratum, or the consciousness of God. If we act against the telos, what happens may be that those elements of our minds that do not match the mind of God get recycled endlessly until they properly refine themselves.”
In short, CTMU's reality “is a self-refining informational system which, due to its form, cannot NOT exist. Even if there is nothingness, this system will exist and know itself and all of the localized conscious minds within its creation process will experience its informational structure as real, physical, etc. It is thus self-creating, as it requires nothing outside of itself to exist” (CTMU Wiki, n.d.).
Regarding consciousness, Langan says, “the CTMU’s relationship to consciousness is just this: it identifies reality as a reflexive identity operator which is its own operand, that is, as (a) that which identifies, and (b) that which is identified. This is simply a tautological generic description of self-awareness or ‘consciousness,’ and must inevitably define the reality of self-aware beings, as adumbrated by a suitable formulation of the so-called ‘strong anthropic principle’” (Langan, 2024, personal communication—above).
