Keppler’s Zero-Point Field
Physicist Joachim Keppler posits that consciousness is an intrinsic feature of the universe embedded in the quantum vacuum, specifically the zero-point field (ZPF) from quantum field theory, and that the brain acts as a resonant, dynamical interface that modulates and orchestrates specific modes of the ZPF, allowing access to certain conscious states.

Key Takeaways
Core Claim
Consciousness is a fundamental feature of the universe, rooted in the quantum vacuum’s zero-point field.
How It Works
The brain resonates with specific ZPF modes, selectively amplifying them to produce conscious states.
Distinguishing Idea
Treats the ZPF as a universal “palette” of qualia, with brain activity acting like a resonant filter.
Implications
Suggests neurotransmitter control of ZPF coupling could explain shifts in awareness and guide new research.
Keppler’s Zero-Point Field
Physicist Joachim Keppler posits that consciousness is an intrinsic feature of the universe embedded in the quantum vacuum, specifically the zero-point field (ZPF) from quantum field theory, and that the brain acts as a resonant, dynamical interface that modulates and orchestrates specific modes of the ZPF, giving rise to the activation of specific phenomenal qualities and, hence, the formation of differentiated conscious states (Keppler 2025a, 2025b, 2021, 2024 — following). Thus, consciousness is fundamental, primitive, much like spacetime and mass-energy. While consistent with panpsychism, Keppler’s ZPF theory offers specific and unique mechanisms.
Consciousness as Substrate
Keppler’s core message is that consciousness is not produced by the brain; rather, it is based on an “all-pervasive substrate.” From this perspective, he says, “individual consciousness results from the dynamic interaction between the brain and this substrate, or in other words, whenever the activity of the brain leaves a fingerprint (an information state) in this substrate, it generates a conscious state.”
Neurophysiology and Quantum Field Theory
Keppler brings together his views of the neurophysiology of consciousness and of quantum field theory. From the perspective of the neurophysiology, he relies on an electromagnetic field theory of consciousness. “Empirical findings indicate that conscious states are linked to long-range synchronized activity patterns that result from phase transitions and exhibit the key features of self-organized criticality” (Keppler, 2025a).
From the perspective of quantum field theory, he focuses on the vacuum state of quantum electrodynamics (QED), an essential ingredient of which is “a fluctuating ocean of energy, the ubiquitous electromagnetic zero-point field (ZPF), consisting of a spectrum of normal modes” (Keppler, 2025a).
Keppler explains that being the fundamental substrate mediating the electromagnetic force, the ZPF constitutes “the ultimate bedrock of all electromagnetic phenomena.“ That’s why, he says, “resonant interaction with the ZPF is critical for understanding rapidly forming, long-range coherent activity patterns that are characteristic of brain dynamics,” and thus for explaining the origin of brain phase transitions and critical dynamics that are essential for consciousness (Keppler, 2021).
Keppler states he has advanced strong arguments that “self-organized criticality” arises “from a bottom-up orchestration process governed by resonant brain-ZPF coupling, with the ZPF playing a leading role in the homeostatic regulation of the neuronal firing rate, which has been identified as a crucial prerequisite for establishing and maintaining the critical regime.” Thus, he says, “a profound new insight takes shape, namely, that the fundamental principle behind the formation of conscious states is the resonant coupling of the brain to the ZPF. This coupling causes an amplification of the dynamically relevant ZPF modes, suggesting that the necessary condition for the formation of a conscious state is the selective amplification of ZPF modes.”
These insights, he argues, “give rise to the hypothesis that the ZPF acts as the universal substrate of consciousness, opening the door to a deeper understanding of consciousness and offering a comprehensible explanation for the emergence of conscious states” (Keppler, 2025).
Resonant Coupling and Phenomenal States
In other words, by positing that “the entire phenomenal color palette is rooted in the vibrational spectrum of the ZPF and that each normal mode of the ZPF is associated with an elementary shade of consciousness,” Keppler reasons that “conscious states are caused by the coupling of the brain to a particular set of normal modes selectively filtered from the full frequency spectrum of the ZPF.” From this perspective, he postulates that the brain functions “as a resonant oscillator that couples to a specific range of ZPF modes, using these modes as a keyboard for the composition of an enormous variety of phenomenal states.”
He speculates that “the brain-ZPF interface is controlled by altering the concentrations of neurotransmitters,” and suggests that the detailed study of the neurotransmitter-ZPF interaction can constitute future research (Keppler, 2021).
[Editor's Note: In a personal communication, Keppler rightly recognizes that while each theory is assigned to a single category on the Landscape, the categories are not mutually exclusive, such that theories may well fall into several categories, but attempting to introduce even secondary categories would add dizzying complexity to a landscape that is already rather complex. Kepper states, "In the case of my theory, the leading category is, quite rightly, 'Quantum & Dimensions.' At the same time, my theory is also compatible with panpsychism (cosmopsychism) and dual-aspect monism, which could be regarded as valid secondary categories."]
