Dalla Barba's Temporal Consciousness
Dalla Barba distinguishes two irreducible modes in which objects and events appear in consciousness: knowing consciousness, which presents them through general knowledge, and temporal consciousness, which presents them as uniquely situated within one’s personal past, present, or future. The theory’s central claim is that episodic remembering, present orientation, and future projection are expressions of a single first-person temporal mode rather than separable memory operations.

Gianfranco Dalla Barba
Neurologist and neuropsychologist
Gianfranco Dalla Barba (1957–2024) was an Italian neurologist and neuropsychologist whose research centered on memory, confabulation, autobiographical identity, and temporal consciousness. Trained in medicine, neurology, and neurological science, he conducted research at Cambridge and INSERM in Paris and later taught neuropsychology at the University of Trieste. His Memory, Consciousness and Temporality theory recast remembering as a mode of consciousness rather than retrieval from stored traces. He was also an Olympic champion sabre fencer.
Dalla Barba's Temporal Consciousness
Neurologist/neuropsychologist Gianfranco Dalla Barba argues that remembering is not the retrieval of a stored trace but a distinct mode of consciousness—Temporal Consciousness—through which individuals have the phenomenological experience of a personal past, an oriented present, and a personal future. On this account, the brain's modifications are atemporal and aspecific, containing nothing that marks them as past or as episodic; temporality and specificity are conferred by a mode of consciousness whose neural correlate is proposed to be the hippocampus. The theory is built by rejecting two assumptions Dalla Barba regards as fatal to standard memory science, the memory trace paradox and the homunculus fallacy, and it is tested against amnesia, in which Temporal Consciousness is lost, and confabulation, in which it is distorted. Developed with Marie-Françoise Boissé and Valentina La Corte, it is phenomenological in lineage and claims to be falsifiable in its predictions.

Confabulation is therefore interpreted not merely as inaccurate retrieval but as a disturbance in how experience is placed within personal time (Dalla Barba, 2002; Dalla Barba & Boissé, 2010).
Temporal and Knowing Consciousness
Consciousness, on this account, is always consciousness of something and always presents its object in a particular way. Because the same pen may be perceived, imagined, liked, known, or remembered, the theory posits several original and irreducible modes of consciousness, none reducible to the others by causal or ontological cascade. Two carry the argument. Knowing Consciousness affords awareness of impersonal information across past, present, and future—that a given figure once held office, that another holds it now, that some medical advance is likely within a decade. Knowing consciousness concerns what an object is: a pen is recognized as a pen, Paris as a city, or an event as belonging to a familiar category. Its contents are repeatable and relatively impersonal; many instances can instantiate the same knowledge.
Temporal consciousness, by contrast, presents an object or event as mine and as occupying a determinate place in my lived temporal existence. A remembered meeting is experienced not simply as an event that occurred, but as something that happened to me; an anticipated journey is experienced as a possible episode in my future (Dalla Barba, 2002). Temporal Consciousness affords the phenomenological experience of remembering one's own past, being present to one's present world, and projecting oneself into specific future episodes (Dalla Barba and La Corte, 2013). These are not independent faculties. They are transformations of one structure that enables the subject to experience continuity across change and to apprehend the uniqueness of an occurrence against the multiplicity supplied by knowing consciousness. Dalla Barba gives temporality an encompassing role: the issue is not only whether information is episodic or semantic, but the phenomenal mode through which any content is personally temporalized (Dalla Barba & Boissé, 2010). Personal temporality is thus distinguishable from impersonal temporality—a distinction the theory insists is empirically measurable rather than merely conceptual.
Two Rejected Assumptions
Dalla Barba's point of departure is critique (Dalla Barba, 2001; Dalla Barba, 2002). The memory trace paradox is the difficulty that a trace, being a present state, cannot by itself carry the pastness of what it represents; nothing in a pattern of synaptic modification marks it as standing for something already past rather than imagined or anticipated. The homunculus fallacy is the tacit attribution of subjective intentional life to a brain region—typically the frontal lobe, in monitoring accounts of confabulation, which is said to search, evaluate, and verify memories on the subject's behalf. Dalla Barba treats such postulates as unconscious explanatory idols that displace the explanandum (Dalla Barba, 2009). For Dalla Barba, what replaces them is a commitment, drawn from Brentano, Husserl, Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty, that consciousness is always consciousness of something and addresses its object in irreducibly different modes.
Uniqueness and Multiplicity
The modes are further separated by what they seize in the object. Temporal Consciousness addresses uniqueness: this specific pen, bought last week and to be used this afternoon. Knowing Consciousness addresses multiplicity: a pen, an indeterminate member of a category. Temporal Consciousness interacts with less stable patterns of brain modification to capture uniqueness; Knowing Consciousness interacts with more stable patterns to capture multiplicity. The distinction generates the theory's most direct prediction, that confabulation should consist largely in mistaking repeated events for unique ones—tested by having patients judge whether items had been seen once or four times, with confabulators but not non-confabulating amnesics treating repeated items as unique (Serra et al., 2014).
Confabulation and Personal Time
The theory was developed principally through neuropsychological work on confabulation. Confabulating patients commonly produce plausible autobiographical statements without intending deception and with little recognition that the statements are false. For Temporal Consciousness Theory, the decisive abnormality is that information available in knowing consciousness is inserted into an inappropriate personal temporal framework. Habits, semantic knowledge, familiar routines, or imagined possibilities may be experienced as singular episodes that happened, are happening, or will happen to the subject. The content may be broadly coherent while its mode of givenness is temporally misplaced (Dalla Barba & Boissé, 2010).
This interpretation explains how knowing consciousness can remain relatively preserved while temporal consciousness is severely distorted. In a detailed case study, a patient’s general knowledge and recognition capacities remained substantially intact even as autobiographical claims were assigned to an erroneous personal present or past (La Corte et al., 2011). Confabulation thus becomes a disorder of phenomenal temporal orientation: the patient does not merely assert the wrong date but inhabits an incorrectly organized experiential now, past, or future.
Amnesia, Confabulation, and the Hippocampus
Complete bilateral hippocampal damage abolishes Temporal Consciousness: such patients retain semantic knowledge, personal semantics, and chronological time, and can even learn their own biography, yet have no experience of remembering it or of projecting themselves forward. Confabulators, by contrast, retain at least partial hippocampal integrity regardless of where else they are lesioned, and their Temporal Consciousness is not lost but malfunctioning, receiving distorted input from any of more than twenty regions (Dalla Barba and Boissé, 2010). Most confabulations are accordingly plausible rather than bizarre—habits and routines seized as unique episodes—and extend across personal past, present, and future alike. Dalla Barba and La Corte propose the hippocampus as the neural correlate of Temporal Consciousness, its function being to temporalize otherwise atemporal cortical modifications (Dalla Barba and La Corte, 2015).
Falsifiability and Contested Ground
The account specifies its own defeaters: it fails if patients with complete bilateral hippocampal destruction can answer questions tapping Temporal Consciousness, if such patients confabulate, if patients amnesic for their personal past retain phenomenological experience of their future, or if confabulation about the past dissociates from confabulation about the future. Craver and colleagues objected that the construct is ambiguous, since amnesic patients retain much temporal competence (Craver et al., 2014); Dalla Barba and La Corte replied that those spared abilities belong to Knowing Consciousness, while conceding that earlier formulations had been imprecise. The deeper dispute is whether positing an irreducible mode of consciousness explains the clinical dissociations or redescribes them.
Assessment
The theory is unusual in deriving a claim about phenomenal consciousness from neuropsychological dissociation while refusing the inferential machinery—traces, monitors, executive homunculi—that ordinarily mediates such derivations. Its strengths are the tight coupling of a phenomenological distinction to a measurable clinical instrument and an explicit falsification protocol. Its exposure is that the irreducibility of Temporal Consciousness is asserted on phenomenological grounds rather than argued for, so that critics who deny the mode can redescribe the same data in representational terms without evident loss.
Placement
Dalla Barba’s Temporal Consciousness is placed in Material / Neurobiological because the theory's primary evidence is lesion neuropsychology and its central claim is a neural correlate. There is a real alternative, here as a criss-reference: Dalla Barba calls his own model "neurophenomenological," draws his framework explicitly from Brentano, Husserl, Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty, and would sit defensibly in Phenomenology alongside Gurwitsch.
