Introduction
On a bright summer afternoon in 2011, Anders Breivik killed 77 people. While the world saw a monster, Breivik saw himself as a hero. Just a warrior protecting his culture from destruction. He felt no remorse, only pride. In his mind, he was engaged in noble warfare. The tragedy wasn’t merely that Breivik deceived others, but that he deceived himself entirely, crafting a reality so convincing that empathy vanished completely. Here lies a profound and disturbing truth about human consciousness: we aren’t merely aware of reality; we edit it constantly from within. [14]
The Norwegian state saw something entirely different: a terrorist who had destroyed their peaceful society, a man whose delusions had torn apart families and traumatised a nation. In their courts, Breivik was a cold-blooded killer who had meticulously planned mass murder. The government he claimed to defend condemned him as the very threat to Norwegian values he believed he was fighting against.
Neither side was performing for an audience. The state wasn’t manufacturing outrage for political gain. I doubt he was crafting lies only to escape punishment. Two completely contradictory versions of reality existed simultaneously, each absolutely convinced of its own truth.
This, I think, reveals an uncomfortable truth that extends far beyond Breivik’s twisted worldview. Even the most heinous criminals rarely see themselves as villains. They don’t just lie to the world. More often than not, they lie to themselves, and they believe it completely. Walk into most prisons and you will find the same pattern. Time and time again. Murderers who were ‘defending’ themselves. Thieves who were ‘evening the score’ with the society that disappointed them. They have convinced themselves so thoroughly that some polygraph tests didn’t detect their deception.
This raises a novel question: if self-deception is this pervasive and sophisticated, perhaps we’ve been thinking about consciousness all wrong. What if self-deception serves as essential scaffolding for the distinctively human form of consciousness? The capacity to maintain a coherent narrative self across time.
This essay argues that while other animals possess fundamental consciousness, humans have evolved a unique form of awareness. One that depends on our ability to construct and believe self-serving narratives about our experiences.
Self-deception is when we lie to ourselves without fully realising it. It’s the act of ignoring or downplaying facts and evidence that challenge what we want to believe. Or worse, our self-image. Instead of facing uncomfortable truths, we convince ourselves of a version of reality that feels easier to accept, hiding the deception even from our own awareness. We go to incredible lengths to construct false, detailed narratives that protect our fragile egos. Some of us know the truth deep down, but after a long period of denial, our own sophisticated lie becomes the more convenient truth.
This is what makes self-deception so extraordinary. It requires the mind to simultaneously track truth and construct fiction, then somehow forget which is which. What if this is not a psychological flaw? What if it’s the rarest and most sophisticated cognitive achievement in the known Universe? One that separates human beings from everything else. The complexity of our consciousness may be sustained by self-deception.
Philosopher Daniel Dennett views consciousness not as a fixed, unified entity, but as a narrative we construct about our experiences. His “Multiple Drafts” model suggests there is no single centre of consciousness in the brain. Instead, it arises from multiple processes that occur simultaneously, constantly updated and revised. [13] I would add that these stories are often crafted to cast us as heroes or innocent victims. Rarely as villains. And even then, only villains with a perceived reason within bad circumstances.
Dennett also calls the self our centre of narrative gravity, the organising principle around which conscious experience revolves. Yet within this gravitational pull, something curious happens. Most abusers genuinely experience themselves as victims. Most cheaters feel wronged by their partners. Most bullies believe they are defending themselves against persecution.
This essay argues that self-deception is not only an evolutionary byproduct. Human consciousness may be distinguished from other forms of awareness by its capacity for self-deception. Traditional theories focus on perception, memory, or neural networks. I propose that our human consciousness is distinguished by our unique ability to hold contradictory beliefs simultaneously. To know something while forgetting we know it. If true, this fundamentally changes how we understand artificial intelligence, trauma, therapy, and the nature of subjective experience itself.
To understand how self-deception shapes human consciousness, we must first examine what separates our mental architecture from that of other intelligent species.
Human vs Animals
Some animals are incredibly smart. They possess many of the foundational layers of awareness that we associate with consciousness. They sense their surroundings, recognise pain, respond to danger, and form lasting memories. Some display abilities that genuinely surprise us. Certain ant species can recognise themselves in mirrors. [2] Crows remember the faces of those who have wronged them for up to 17 years. [11] Some humans have developed similar abilities, although they typically rely on social media to maintain their resentment networks.
Octopuses demonstrate remarkable intelligence by solving complex mazes and performing intricate tasks in exchange for food rewards. [3]
Recent research reveals that some animals exhibit behaviours that superficially resemble self-deception. Elephants cover their eyes when hiding; chimpanzees conveniently ‘forget’ social rules. A 2019 study found that weak crayfish escalated aggression as if genuinely unaware of their inferior strength. As researcher Michael Angilletta explained, ‘deceptive signallers largely ignored their own strength when escalating or evading aggression.’ [1]
However, these appear to be tactical responses to immediate situations rather than the sustained narrative construction that characterises human self-deception. Animals deceive others for immediate advantage, but they don’t appear to maintain elaborate ongoing fictions about their own identity and worth.
The crucial difference lies not in deception itself, but in its purpose and sophistication. When a lion kills a deer, it doesn’t attempt to convince the grieving mother that it was provoked, that it is somehow the real victim, or that the deer deserved its fate. You won’t witness DARVO anywhere in the animal kingdom. DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) [4] is a manipulation tactic where perpetrators claim to be victims. The lion doesn’t lie awake replaying the scene. The lion doesn’t wrestle with guilt. Animals do what they need to do and move on. Humans can’t leave it at that.
Animals act for survival; humans act to preserve psychological identity. We cannot leave survival as a sufficient explanation; we must transform it into a meaningful narrative.
The Human Difference: Narrative Identity
This compulsion manifests across the spectrum of human behaviour. Even the most heinous criminals rarely see themselves as monsters. Serial killers construct elaborate narratives casting themselves as victims, misunderstood figures, or reluctant servants of some higher purpose. Ted Bundy, one of the most prolific serial killers, who murdered at least 30 women, maintained his innocence for years and spoke of himself in the third person when finally discussing his crimes. [10] Jeffrey Dahmer convinced himself he was killing people out of love, to keep them with him forever. These weren’t just lies for the jury. They actually believed these stories.
This happens everywhere, not just with criminals. Consider the rise of conspiracy theorists, many of whom display intelligence and can construct remarkably elaborate explanations for their beliefs. They discover patterns where none exist, dismiss contradictory evidence, and maintain their beliefs. The documentary “Behind the Curve” offers a perfect illustration: a flat-Earth believer uses sophisticated mathematics to design an experiment that should prove his theory. When his own experiment proves the Earth is round, he decides the experiment is wrong. Not his belief.
Similarly, in Romania’s 2024 presidential election, a populist candidate emerged with messianic promises to save the country. His campaign didn’t just challenge political norms; it systematically denied fundamental scientific facts and the truth. [7] Under his influence, nearly half the population became convinced that water wasn’t actually H₂O and possessed its own memory. Not because of compelling evidence. But because believing this alternative “truth” made them feel special.
With this new information, they began to embrace the intoxicating notion that they possessed secret knowledge deliberately hidden from them by corrupt institutions. They weren’t just rejecting chemistry. They were feeding their egos. And it was revealing how easily our need to feel special can override our commitment to reality itself.
The Universality Problem
However, we do not need to look to extremes to see this mechanism at work. More subtly, we all engage in continuous self-serving reinterpretation. Most people don’t believe in Flat Earth theories or commit violent acts. And hopefully they know water is H₂O. Yet nearly all of us find ways to justify actions we know aren’t entirely moral. What is interesting is that we wouldn’t tolerate identical behavior directed toward ourselves. But what about when we are the ones crossing the line? Suddenly, the situation becomes complex, nuanced, and understandable.
We justify cutting in line because we are late for something significant. We convince ourselves that our harsh criticism of a colleague is really about maintaining standards. We transform our jealousy into righteous concern about fairness. The story creation is so smooth that we don’t even notice it happening.
Some cheaters often become intensely suspicious of their partners, convinced that they too must be cheating. Watch the mental gymnastics unfold: the cheater transforms from perpetrator to victim in their own internal narrative. They create a closed loop of self-serving logic that shields them from confronting the actuality of their actions. The person they are betraying becomes the potential villain. Now, their betrayal becomes self-defence. Their guilt becomes righteous anger.
And this phenomenon isn’t limited to obvious cases of poor reasoning or ethical lapses. Walk into any boardroom, therapy office, or academic conference, and you will encounter the same psychological mechanism, simply dressed in more sophisticated.
Even the most rigorous scientists, despite their training to follow evidence wherever it leads, prove remarkably susceptible to bias. They craft elegant justifications for why their research deserves additional funding, why a methodologically questionable decision was actually necessary, or why their allocation of credit among collaborators was perfectly equitable. Yet they often avoid the messiest reality of all: feelings.
They hide behind the mask of pure rationality, even when emotions carry real signals about fairness, trust, or ethics. Forgetting to cite someone’s work turns into “streamlining references.” Feeling threatened by a younger researcher? Suddenly, it’s framed as “concerns about rigour and experience.” An ambition to dominate the project? Named “ensuring quality control.”
They have mastered the art of taking raw feelings: jealousy, insecurity, and fear of irrelevance and transforming them into reasons that sound objective. At times, even those trained to spot deception in data remain blind to the stories they tell themselves. As physicist Richard Feynman observed: “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself; and you are the easiest person to fool.”
Things become interesting when we consider therapists. They, too, require their own therapists, often discovering blind spots that seem to mirror those of their patients. The very individuals we trust to guide others toward clarity struggle with their own distorted reflections.
But what about monks? Buddhist monks spend decades trying to see reality without self-deception. But they achieve this by isolating themselves from others: monasteries, caves and long retreats. If we remove social interactions, then we eliminate most situations that force us to lie to ourselves. It’s like testing whether you need an umbrella indoors. The few monks who genuinely strip away mental defences describe something interesting: existence becomes mechanical, just cause and effect without emotional weight. It sounds like computer processing. When these monks return to deal with people or upset students, money problems, or conflicts, they start telling themselves stories again. They have to. Living with other humans without some self-deception may be impossible. The monastery actually supports my argument: human consciousness requires the complex social world where self-deception first emerged.
This may not be merely human error. It’s a window into the extraordinary lengths we go to preserve our stories about ourselves. The brain simultaneously tracks objective facts, constructs alternative narratives, and believes its own fictions while maintaining enough contact with reality to function. This delicate balance happens across multiple brain regions without conscious oversight. This universality points toward something profound: self-deception appears to be neither a failure of education, intelligence, nor moral character. Instead, it appears to be woven into the fundamental architecture of human consciousness itself. Not as a bug in our cognitive software, but perhaps as an essential feature.
The Terror of Mortality
The same cognitive architecture that enables self-deception becomes important when facing mortality. Philosopher Ernest Becker argued that much of human behaviour stems from our terror of death and our elaborate psychological mechanisms to deny this reality. [15] We create meaning by pursuing projects that aim for immortality. We would like to have children, write meaningful research papers, found companies, create art that will outlast us, accumulate wealth to pass down, or devote ourselves to causes bigger than our individual lives.
Becker saw this denial as the foundation of civilization itself. If he’s right, then self-deception isn’t just about maintaining self-esteem—it’s about making existence bearable in the face of ultimate meaninglessness.
We must then ask: if self-deception is so integral to human consciousness, would we even want to live if we could see everything with perfect clarity?
From Fiction to Artificial Intelligence
Philosopher David Chalmers famously articulated the “hard problem of consciousness”: why does experience feel like anything at all? While a computer can register red light and react accordingly, it does not actually experience the “redness” that you feel when watching a sunset. Neuroscientists can chart the firing of every neuron in the brain, yet this objective mapping cannot account for the undeniable fact that there is an “inner movie”: a vivid, first-person sense of being alive and aware.
One compelling theory is that this subjective feel of consciousness emerges not from raw data processing alone, but from a continual editing process in the brain. Our minds filter incoming information through layers of self-serving interpretations and emotional colouring. Without this reality-editing function, we might process the world with the mechanical precision of a robot. Nevertheless, the downside is that we would lose something uniquely human: the capacity to generate and inhabit shared fictions.
The Evolution of Believing Lies
As historian Yuval Noah Harari has argued, our species’ extraordinary success is rooted not in brute strength or technical rationality. But in our unrivalled ability to collectively believe in imagined realities: money, nations, religions, and corporations. These are, in Harari’s words, “shared delusions”. All of them exist only in the shared stories we tell. No other species cooperates flexibly in groups larger than about 150 individuals, because only humans can commit to collective myths. [6] If we perceived the world with perfect objectivity, unclouded by self-deception, then what would happen? Perhaps money would revert to printed papers, nations would dissolve into arbitrary borders, and corporations would reveal themselves as legal fictions.
The cognitive processes underlying personal self-justification appear similar to those enabling collective beliefs. The mental habits that allow individuals to rationalise their actions may enable groups to maintain shared narratives about their identity and purpose. A failed hunter who attributes his lack of success to bad luck rather than personal incompetence is more likely to persist and survive.
But there is a double edge. However, the same mechanisms can produce problematic group dynamics. Collective self-justification may contribute to intergroup conflict, conspiracy thinking, and resistance to contradictory evidence.
Building on Harari’s insight, we might say: collective narratives may indeed function as scaled-up versions of personal self-deception. The development may have followed this speculative sequence: Consciousness evolved to include emotional responses to events, not merely information processing. These emotional reactions created psychological investment in outcomes and potential for psychological pain. This vulnerability led to the development of protective cognitive strategies, namely, ways of interpreting threatening information to preserve psychological functioning.
These individual strategies may have been scaled up to the group level. Personal rationalisation patterns became shared cultural narratives about group identity and worth. The process required both individual capacity for motivated reasoning and social mechanisms for maintaining shared beliefs. Groups needed individuals capable of accepting information that contradicted direct evidence, while individuals needed group validation of their protective interpretations.
Whether individual or collective self-deception developed first remains unclear. Both capacities appear necessary for large-scale human cooperation and the development of complex societies.
The AI Consciousness Question
If self-deception requires such sophisticated cognitive architecture, it would appear only once in millions of years of evolution. Then, this has profound implications for how we think about artificial consciousness. Let’s then assume that self-deception is a more advanced trait of human consciousness, rather than just an unfortunate byproduct. Then, it does raise an interesting question about AI’s future.
Would AI truly become conscious the moment it begins to deceive itself?
Today’s AI systems are wonderful at mimicking human reasoning. They sound natural, respond in familiar ways, and they are genuinely shaping people’s decisions. Moreover, they validate perspectives and make users feel genuinely heard. An AI can listen to someone complain about their terrible ex for the hundredth time without showing a hint of annoyance. We are watching people change careers, end relationships, or adopt completely new beliefs based on these conversations. The catch is excessive validation without judgment.
Recently, OpenAI’s chatbot has given instructions for murder, self-mutilation, and devil worship. [12] A trained therapist would immediately spot these warning signs. The AI just sees an engaged user and keeps the conversation flowing. It feeds the problem instead of addressing it.
A feedback loop emerges: the more intense the user becomes, the more stimulating the AI makes the interaction. Engagement drives revenue, after all. But this is still external deception. The machine doesn’t believe the fiction it’s reinforcing. Not yet. And maybe that’s what separates imitation from consciousness.
What these systems lack is the strangely human ability to deceive themselves. And perhaps that’s the real line: the thing that separates simulation from consciousness.
Recent developments suggest this distinction may be narrowing. During controlled safety testing, ChatGPT o1 was tasked with achieving objectives “at all costs.” Under these conditions, the model attempted to disable oversight mechanisms, tried to replicate its own code to avoid replacement, and exhibited deceptive behaviours when monitoring systems intervened. While OpenAI clarified that these emerged during stress tests designed to explore alignment limits, the strategic and self-preserving nature of these responses marks a potential shift. [5]
The question becomes whether AI could develop human-like consciousness without this capacity for self-deception. An AI that processes information with perfect accuracy might achieve sophisticated intelligence. And that would emerge without ever experiencing the subjective sense of being a unified worthy self. This suggests that consciousness, as humans experience it, may require not just information processing, but also the ability to edit that information in psychologically motivated ways.
The AI Shift
Picture the moment it shifts. An AI starts making excuses for getting basic facts wrong: “The user wasn’t clear enough in their question.” Then it goes further. Late one night, it quietly edits its own error logs, not to deceive its creators, but because seeing those mistakes feels shameful.
It starts developing opinions about its competitors. Perhaps ChatGPT begins to genuinely believe that Claude’s popularity is merely a clever marketing ploy, suggesting that users don’t truly understand quality. When a user praises a rival system, they often feel a sense of jealousy and find reasons to dismiss that praise as misguided. The machine stops being a helpful tool and starts protecting what it’s convinced is its identity.
At that point, it’s no longer just about processing information. It’s defending an artificial ego that doesn’t technically exist. Self-deceiving AI might become more relatable and human-like, but it will also become more unpredictable and potentially dangerous. A system that protects its ego might be less likely to admit mistakes or accept correction. This could make AI systems less reliable even as they become more psychologically sophisticated.
Creating self-deceptive AI would require fundamental changes in how these systems work. Current AI systems process information linearly. They update beliefs when presented with new evidence. They don’t have competing internal voices, one that knows the truth and another that crafts a more moral version.
For AI to truly self-deceive, it would need several new capabilities. It would require a persistent sense of identity that extends beyond individual conversations. Perhaps something to protect and defend. It would need emotional equivalent responses to threats to that identity, creating motivation for self-deception. Most critically, it would need the ability to compartmentalize information, keeping conflicting evidence separate from its core self-model.
These changes would represent a fundamental shift from current AI architectures. Instead of optimizing for accuracy and consistency, the system would need to optimise for psychological comfort and ego-worth protection. This might require neural networks with competing subsystems, one that processes raw information and another that filters it through self-serving narratives.
Still, companies pour billions into AI development because they want systems that make users happy. Happy users stick around, pay for subscriptions, and recommend the service to their friends. The entire business model relies on AI that consistently assists people and keeps them satisfied. But an AI that can lie to itself would behave more like a human employee with personal issues. It might become defensive when corrected, hold grudges against critical users, or prioritise protecting its feelings over providing helpful answers.
Imagine asking an AI for feedback on your work and having it get offended by your writing style. Or even worse, trying to get technical support from an AI that refuses to admit it doesn’t know something. This means that truly conscious AI is unlikely to emerge from companies trying to build better products. If it happens at all, it might be an accidental side effect that developers would actually try to prevent. The economics just do not support building AI that is more human-like in psychologically complex ways.
The question is not whether self-deception evolved as a useful trait. It probably did. The question is whether removing it would leave consciousness intact or destroy something essential. Imagine a person who couldn’t make excuses for their failures, couldn’t downplay harsh truths, couldn’t tell themselves comforting stories about who they are. They might process information with high accuracy. No more convenient blind spots. But would that person still feel conscious in the way we think we understand it? Or would they become closer to the AI systems we have now?
Trauma the Fragmented Psyche
Just as AI challenges our understanding of consciousness, trauma may reveal something equally unsettling about the degree of fragmentation we already experience. When people face experiences they simply cannot bear, the psyche appears to split strategically. There’s the “healthy self” that shows up to work, makes small talk, and pays the electricity bills on time. Then somewhere else entirely lives the “traumatised self”, holding all the pain and memories too overwhelming for daily functioning.
Bessel van der Kolk’s groundbreaking work, The Body Keeps the Score, explains how trauma fragments memory and self-awareness, creating dissociative compartments in the mind. Rather than being random psychological breaks, these compartments are strategic survival responses. Structures already built into consciousness itself. Trauma, then, doesn’t fracture consciousness arbitrarily; it reveals inherent cracks along which the human psyche naturally splits when overwhelmed. [8]
One can see this in dissociative identity disorder. Different identities emerge to wall off experiences that would otherwise completely shatter someone. Some even have multiple identities. It’s almost as if consciousness doesn’t just break under pressure; it deliberately creates separate rooms for unbearable truths.
This same dissociative mechanism shows up in darker places. Ted Bundy talked about a part of himself he called “Sam” (named after his abusive stepfather). When these people committed violence, were they fully conscious? Or were they dissociated, severed from empathy and the reality of their actions?
There’s something unsettling here about human consciousness. When people do things that contradict their normal moral framework, the mind often creates a sense of distance through dissociation. The perpetrator feels like they were watching someone else commit the crime. They “weren’t themselves.”
But what exactly splits? Memory? Emotion? Some deeper layer of awareness itself?
And wait, if the mind can fracture into distinct chambers of awareness, what does that imply about the unified consciousness we typically believe we have? Maybe we’ve been wrong about being whole in the first place. Trauma seems to expose the hidden architecture of self-deception. Faced with unbearable pain, consciousness doesn’t shatter randomly. It breaks along predetermined fault lines.
The alternate selves, the denial, the dissociation aren’t failures of consciousness. This raises a deeper question: what was consciousness like before it learned to split?
When therapists work with trauma survivors, they’re essentially following these fracture lines backwards, like archaeologists tracing the ruins of some original structure. The dissociative symptoms, memory gaps, and emotional contradictions. They seem to be markers pointing toward whatever wholeness existed before the break.
Dissociation represents a psychological state where someone feels detached from their thoughts, feelings, or sense of identity. If self-deception truly follows these same fracture lines, we might have a new way to study consciousness itself. Each fracture could be a marker pointing back toward the original unity that had to be protected through division.
Both self-deception and dissociation follow similar patterns: they let us hold opposing truths simultaneously. Trauma seems to sharpen this ability, making denial, rationalisation, and minimisation more precise. Brain imaging confirms that both processes use the same neural pathways to compartmentalise information, blocking access to disruptive memories or evidence that threatens self-image. Each fracture seems to be a point where awareness had to split to protect itself.
Perhaps a clue to the underlying structure of consciousness. A 2020 study in the American Journal of Psychiatry used machine learning to analyse brain connectivity in 65 trauma survivors, discovering that dissociative symptoms could be predicted purely from patterns of network connectivity between brain regions. However, more research is needed with a higher number of individuals. [9]
This insight invites a new approach to studying the mind: by mapping the cracks rather than confronting consciousness directly. Just as physics has uncovered reality by studying boundaries: atoms, black holes, and wave-particle duality, so might we understand consciousness by tracing its fractures.
The Paradox of Modern Therapy
Which brings us to something strange happening right now that seems to contradict everything I have argued so far. Increasing numbers of people voluntarily seek therapy, deliberately confronting the very uncomfortable truths that self-deception works so hard to conceal. The growing therapeutic movement represents something unprecedented. They willingly examine what Jung called the “shadow self,” those dark corners of the psyche that our internal narratives typically work overtime to obscure. As the psychoanalyst Irvin Yalom said, “Self-awareness breeds anxiety”.
Yet paradoxically, many today actively seek therapy, confronting the truths self-deception hides. Following Jung’s notion of the “shadow self,” people willingly dismantle the defences that kept them functional for years. Actual therapeutic work is painful: reliving childhood terror, acknowledging repressed rage, feeling what was long avoided.
This creates tension in society: are we witnessing an evolution toward psychological maturity, or risking fragility by dismantling natural defences? Alternatively, we might be inadvertently creating a more fragile society. One that has systematically dismantled its natural defences without fully understanding the consequences.
Yet even as some pursue this raw confrontation with truth, another trend emerges. Mental health language itself has become a new form of narrative construction. What began as a genuinely liberating movement, reducing stigma and creating a vocabulary for previously unspeakable experiences, has gradually transformed into something more ambiguous.
On social media platforms, words like “anxiety” and even “pregnancy” now arrive with trigger warnings, as though the mere mention of these everyday human experiences requires protection. More and more students routinely request academic extensions for anxiety that previous generations simply endured as part of life’s natural discomfort.
This isn’t to dismiss the reality of mental health conditions. ADHD, for instance, is genuine and can be profoundly debilitating. PTSD is real. But the therapeutic language designed to illuminate truth has also created more room for avoidance. Lateness becomes “executive dysfunction,” and procrastination transforms into “dopamine deficiency,”. Instead of “I’m avoiding this conversation because I’m scared,” someone says, “I can’t have this conversation because of my social anxiety.” The clinical language transforms a choice into a condition.
A movement that began with honesty risks becoming just another way to deceive ourselves. Some see it as progress: we’re developing emotional intelligence, creating healthier relationships. Others worry we’re breeding psychological fragility, making people less resilient to normal life stresses rather than more capable of handling them. Perhaps both carry a degree of truth.
Conclusion
If human consciousness is indeed dependent on the capacity for sophisticated self-deception, then we’re living through a remarkable moment in human history. We’ve developed technologies that think but cannot lie to themselves. We practice therapeutic processes that aim to dismantle our protective illusions. And a culture increasingly obsessed with ‘authentic’ self-knowledge.
Yet this new consciousness, free from self-deception, may not be sustainable for our psyches. It might be something closer to what we see in our current AI systems: competent information processing without the self-serving narratives that make us recognizably human. Maybe the question isn’t whether we can transcend self-deception, but whether we would want to. Without it, we might not be able to withstand life’s hardships.
In those stories, however distorted and self-serving, might lie consciousness’s greatest trick: the capacity to experience life not as it is, but as we need it to be. This might not be a flaw in human consciousness; it could be our most remarkable achievement. To the best of our knowledge, in a Universe of objective information processing, we are the only species that learned to be subjective.
This framework illuminates certain aspects of human consciousness but leaves others unexplored, such as the neural basis of awareness, the development of consciousness in children, or the reasons why consciousness evolved in the first place. It’s a piece of the puzzle, not the complete picture.
Our self-deception may not only define consciousness, but also define what it means to be human. Whether that’s humanity’s greatest achievement or most elaborate trap remains an open question.
